I was going  to suggest to my daughter that  she  takes  a sick day so we can hunt tomorrow, but she said she is working a double shift today so she can take tomorrow off along with having Thursday and Friday off. What a girl. We're going to give it our best to get bull number 2. Keeping our fingers crossed.

Even though we got a great deer, and a couple bulls came out, my over all impression of the shed is, it’s over rated. It’s a cool place to be in, don’t get me wrong, but we have been in every day except Monday and we have seen two bucks, 5 does, one spike elk and 3 cows.  In an area that is probably the most protected area in the state. I hear there are a lot of predators, haven’t seen one yet, no bears, cats or coyotes. The inspectors are great, friendly and helpful.  Trying to not be completely negative, just honest.  A few points sure, but more than a few points, I’d apply else where.  What is really crazy is the cow elk hunters aren’t doing well??  That makes no sense, but maybe this year the cow hunters aren’t trying hard? Every morning there should be a dead cow in the elk fields, the inspector I talked to doesn’t get it either.  We did pick about 3 lbs of chanterelles though!!  Two more days to try and kill a bear, still excited to visit the shed.

Igotanewknee, have you guys hit the 18.5 mile area? I was told the elk hang out there all year long. And that road that goes to Lester, about 1 or 2 miles after smay creek, is also nice. Good luck, hope you guys get one!

 :yeah:

I have been there Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday (Today 10/21) and have not seen nearly what I had anticipated. I have seen Elk everyday and had missed opportunities, Sunday I had my rifle in the back seat of my truck and as I was getting it out she walked away and I could not find her again. Tuesday I had three opportunities, first was in some thicker brush and all I could see was a quartering shot through a vine maple patch and nothing but Elk Butt, so no shot. Second was two cows with a six by six crossing the mainline, got out and the three of them stuck together like glue and could not get a clean shot on either cow, and they blew out fast.

Third opportunity was a moral/legal decision, had a huge cow standing dead center of the mainline on a blind corner just looking at me dumbfounded. I put my crosshairs on her vitals checked the background and could not justify the shot!

I spent more time in the brush today and was disappointed not to see any Elk in the timber and only one doe, and a spike Blacktail. I did see a cow with a calf and they bolted as soon as I stopped the truck.

Sunday we did see a nice fork Buck and a Coyote, oh and today I finally saw some old Bear sign.

This is the exact spot I shot my elk 3 years ago. Also had 2 bucks fight about 15-20 yards from me while I was field dressing my elk ha ha. I also found some cougar tracks up near eagle lakes.
