Best all around home self Defense options for the lady's
« on: June 30, 2020, 09:34:59 AM »
looking for opinions and pictures as to the best all round self  defense firearms for my lady, excluding hand guns.  She has a full size Remington 870 12 gauge but its just to much for her to handle, she's on the small side and doesn't have the strength to handle a full size firearm with confidence,  We live in the mountains with the nearest neiobhor 1/2 mile down the road. I was thinking about a pump 20 gauge with pistol grip or a  AR-15, plus  pros and cons for calibers,  or should  I modify her shot gun or build one, also what are the legalities of home defense firearms that are not intended for hunting like barrel length's, and shells that a shot gun may hold, OO buck, slugs, turkey loads ?

This might be an unpopular comment but, What about a taser?

I’m not arguing against a 18” 20ga, just suggesting a backup that might avoid some of the legal challenges you asked about.

We are a nation of Riflemen, not tasermen or shotgun men or pistol men.  Get an AR for her.

Everybody who carries should have a nonlethal weapon also.  (Ie. spray) That way when you shoot someone you can argue it was necessary and you did have options. Also some just need a spray or jolt. :chuckle:

I'd stick with a shotgun, but for something outside of shotguns since you asked for suggestions:

A 9mm SBR. Teach her how to shoot it. Put a red dot on, point and shoot. Pretty much zero recoil so she can stay on target for follow ups, huge mag capacity.

Do you have kids? If so, you don't have to worry so much about rounds going through walls.

There is no legal consideration, lethal force is lethal force.  That said, if somebody shoots someone else, they could end up in court and the jury makes the call.  Much has been written about how the jury might take in the situation and many believe that a standard shotgun could be perceived in a better light than a decked out tacti-cool shotgun.  You don't know for sure, but it's never going to hurt you to have the more innocuous looking gun.

If it were me, I would have a semi-auto 20 gauge right out of the box with wood stocks.  It's about as effective and easy to operate as any firearm out there and has tremendous capabilities to stop bad guys.

As a bonus, you can take it out hunting or shooting clays.

She's already familiar with remington 870's.  I'd go with a 20 gauge remington 870 and an AR.

if you get some light recoil rounds, look at the KelTec pump options.

a nice semi-auto choice if you can find one is the Bull Pups, they are small and have pistol grip

if wanting the smaller guage. Look at the Henry X, its a .410 lever gun. it can hold 6 rounds of self defense shells

That is my   :twocents:

Small frame wheel gun like a 38
And agree with the spray As well

No, tasers have low success rate even with trained police

Good double barrel shotgun. Pops open, drop in the shells, lock yourself in any room and if someone forces entry squeeze off the two shots and call the morgue.  Shot size from about 5's down will work fine at that short range, modify the gun if you want but not necessary.  Have a brother  who has been doing crime scene investigations for many years-his advice is to keep it as simple as possible.  He can recount many instances of handguns being fired into ceilings and floors and other types of weapons being misloaded or jammed  in the heat of the moment. Remember most burglars don't want a confrontation , make noise, let them know you're home and police have been called and 99 times out of 100 they'll flee. Use of force is an absolute last resort
