2006 Duramax - PICS ADDED!!!!
« on: July 23, 2020, 05:58:24 AM »
I think I'm buying a 2006 Silverado with the Duramax/Allison power train.

4 door, 4X4.

67K miles

Any issues with that year Duramax?
Good websites to bone up on 2006 Duramax/Allison?

Thanks,
Dan

I have an 02 and love it. 67k is amazingly low miles. Injectors can be a thing and are not a cheap repair. All in all, I am very happy with mine at 285k.

Lbz motor best Duramax ever made. Out of the box power for days and easy to modify.

At those miles that truck isn't even broken in yet. It's got over 200k left before it even thinks about slowing down.

Heck if you don't buy I might.

I have an 06 gmc duramax 4x4 four door long bed, it's been a great truck.  owned it for around 10 years now, only problem was the injector pump blew up, coach fixed it for me and said to put injector cleaner in the tank a couple times a year.  I pulled the cat off and straight piped it, put the edge on it and my mileage went from 10-11 miles to 15-16 miles per gallon.  Even had 20 mph on the freeway before.  Tons of power, great truck so far, I have 150,000 on mine now.

I got my pipe from alligator performance in Idaho, they had it to my door in 2-3 days, installs from the down pipe.  It was simple to install and it really doesn't make your truck that much louder.  Just gives it a throaty sound.  I got the edge because of the lift and bigger tires, the edge tells the truck what size of tires the truck has which helps with the tranny.

I have a 2007 and love it. Had it since it was new and it has over 250,000 on it now. I've had very little trouble with it, just general maintenance you would expect.

The 06 is the goldilocks, definitely buy it!
My old 06 work truck had 340k when they forced me into a new truck. I think we have another one in Utah with 370k. Buy it, don't molest it, and enjoy.

We have the 06 in a one ton dually, Duramax/Allison. Had it since new it is our towing work horse. Just turned 100k during our move.
It pulls our 38ft. 5th wheel and 40ft. horse trailer with ease. My only complaint would be where the engine and tranny are strong, everything else is made of plastic and breaks.
Even though it is 4wd. It does not go off road (wife/GF won't let me) even if she did I wouldn't because of the way things break.  I have a Cummins for the off road driving.

About a year ago I sold my 2006 LBZ 4x4..... had it listed for 22K right here on Huntnw with no takers! Damn that was a good truck! Power galore, surprising fuel mileage and decent ride quality. I bought it with 80K on the odometer and sold with 160K for $25K on CL. (Sold the truck when we decided to sell the big 5th wheel.) Yeah, there were some quality glitches in the interior controls and the turbo had to be replaced at 155K but all in all it was one of the best vehicles I ever owned. Fyi, if you ever need turbo replacement have it done at TurboTech in Tacoma. The dealer will tell you they need to remove the cab to pull the turbo  for $$$$$$ but TurboTech found a way to swap the turbo out for just $$$.

And oh yeah, the ‘06/LBZ is the very last diesel pickup made that did not require DEF additive! One less thing to worry about.

That year is a great year for that engine.

Go for it! Especially with that odometer.

Pretty sure there was a few more years before DEF was required. That was the last year before they switched over to the diesel particulate filter and added other major emissions stuff, but DEF didn't happen till probably 2011-2012 or so. .

07 D/A with 179k on it and goes everywhere. With that low of mileage buy it before the price goes up or someone else buys it. 2006/2007 best truck Duramax combo out there in my opinion.

My 06 LBZ has 235,000 miles on it. Would not hesitate to haul my trailer anywhere with it. Just did its first ever brake job. Did tie rods etc awhile back. Replaced a couple glow plugs. And the alternator. Extremely dependable. Injectors aren't normally an issue on the LBZ. And if there is an issue you only have to replace the bad one because they are on the outside of the valve covers instead of inside. Overall running around I average 18mpg with a heavy foot. I have no doubt I could average 20 or better normal hiway driving. 11 to 14 towing 9000lbs with a heavy foot.

Any Duramax check the upper radiator hose when cold. If hard could be head gasket issues. Whitch are very rare on the LBZ.

Towing my trailer down Jackson pass out of Jackson Wyoming I barely had to touch my brakes because of the engine and transmission combo. Also very easy to wire in the turbo brake.

Look on Silverado sierra duramax forum for tons of excellent  info and lots of help. They have a dedicated LBZ section.

Those engines come stock with 365 hp and 450 lbs torque. Keep the stock air cleaner, good for 500 hp and only use ac delco or racor fuel filters. They are by far the best for that system unless possibly going with Fass Or Air Dog. Change the external Allison tranny filter every other oil change. No need to run synthetic oil in them because they are so easy on oil.

Awesome. You will be very happy with it. Get a bluetooth dongle off Amazon for $20 and download torque pro app for $6 in case you ever throw a code. Can read. Erase with it and monitor almost everything but Egt s.

I remember way back when the Dmax was first introduced. All the Ford and Dodge guys just knew the Dmax wouldn’t succeed with aluminum heads  :chuckle:.

Just my opinion but the Dmax has proven to be a hell of an engine.  I love my LML.

Love my 2006 only issues I have had are the tranny cooler lines leaking and a check engine light for the turbo guide vanes. Check engine light will be fixed soon with the egr delete, tuner and new turbo.

No, Its good oil. Personally I run Delvac. Its really good oil and pretty cheap. These engines are very easy on oil and synthetic is not necessary. Although some people like to run Rotella t6.  Ive always ran Wix oil filters but after looking at a filter comaparison I think I will switch to Baldwin B1441 filters when I am out of the Wix filters.

I had to replace my tranny cooler lines, noticed them leaking when I bought it.  I was able to buy them and install myself, not too bad of a job.

No need for a lift pump for stock or mild mods. You’re Talking about the extra filtration maybe, in which case a lift pump is beneficial if pulling through multiple filters.
That said, both fass and air dog are expensive crap.
OP, just leave your truck alone and it’ll treat you fine.

Dano, great find.
Just use quality filters and change the trans filter regularly. Every other oil change, they’re cheap.
And swap trans fluid for Castrol Transynd. It’s regarded as the best fluid for Allis by far.
So much so that back in the day Alli would extend warranties on trucks that swapped to Transynd early.

No need for a lift pump for stock or mild mods. You’re Talking about the extra filtration maybe, in which case a lift pump is beneficial if pulling through multiple filters.
That said, both fass and air dog are expensive crap.
OP, just leave your truck alone and it’ll treat you fine.

Your correct. I wouldnt put a lift pump on a stock LBZ either. I was just mentioning that in case the previous owner already did.

Transynd is excellent tranny fluid for the Allison. John Deere and others used to sell it rebranded for cheaper but i dont know if you can still get it. I run Mobil 1 Delvac. Its TES 295 approved and from what Ive read on the Duramax forums is on par with the Transynd. You cant go wrong with either.

And oh yeah, the ‘06/LBZ is the very last diesel pickup made that did not require DEF additive! One less thing to worry about.
I believe it was in 2010. Had an 08 and it was DEF free from factory.
