They don’t pick up my calls...one day I’ll get one to answer.

Keep tryin, it will happen when you least expect it.  If you can get over next august i bet you can do it in 3 days or less.

I called one in last Fall in WI, it came running. We didn't get a shot at it though.

"I've heard of a book that discusses all this....it was Ultimate something..."

I've read that book about 10 times.  Usually after I go out looking for Smokey in the I-90 corridor and totally strike out. That book is chocked full of good info (and stories)...  If I could ever figure out who wrote that, I'd sure thank them for publishing it.

PS -- I wonder if humor comes through online.  :)

Good info, thanks! I brought my electronic call tonight in the water shed, in a place the inspectors told me is a good bear area.  I used a cub in destress call pretty much non stop. So my questions,  it’s late in the year, the bears are almost dening up. What is the best call to use now? I thought a cub call would be money since they are looking for some last good calories.  Also, how long should I stay in each area calling before I move on to another place, and how far away should I drive to start calling again?

How late are the bears typically out. Worth it to bring a call during last weekend of modern elk?

It's worth a shot. I almost always have a bear or two on camera into December. I have bears on camera right now so....

I don’t believe there is a time that’s too late to call in a bear. As I believe our bears this far south don’t really hibernate.

I saw three different bears (all within 250 yards of me) while I was out walking in the woods with my gun looking for the unicorn elk in 460 during modern firearm season. Also saw a fair amount of really new scat that was mostly still berries.  Not sure what type of berries, because I didn't see any ripe berries in my human travels, but the bears were still apparently finding plenty all the way until last week.  Couldn't shoot any of them because I'd already filled my tags.  Oh well...let's them get bigger for next year, although one of them was a full-on bruiser that's probably going to eat the last 5 deer in 460 this winter.

Can anybody cut and paste and send this to bango skank.
He has me blocked, and most likely hates my guts.
But.......I'm also getting to old and far in life to leave skeletons in my closet.  :dunno:
This forum could benefit from him.

I was just curious as to why your not on HW anymore.
Is it because of me,or just not into it.
I've seen you post on other forums, what's the deal.
I'm just gonna say sorry for any crap of mine.
Anyway no hard feelings between us I hope.
And wish you luck with your hunting adventure.
That I see on other places beside HW.
It's a shame ,you got a wealth of knowledge, game cam pics, and cool posts to share.Along with our current commission,us hunters should be united. Alot of our disagreement I regret. And realize your are correct on a lot of things I'm not.

Anyway,again sorry.

I know I'm not supposed to bring old topics back from the bone yard. But I've seen alot of posts in 2023 bear harvest topic lately. About bear calling.
On top of that ,just did a calling set this morning after a few hours of glassing.
With no luck ,of course.
Thought maybe this one could be resurrected,to talk with successful bear calling guys in the forum.
What sounds
How long
How loud
You know the details of how to call a black bear.
I've been just slammed this year,no bear poop,no bear in the clear cuts,no bear road hunting,no bear on walk in hunts.
No luck from the bear gods, just nothing.

Thought maybe talking about calling might give me some hope.
Something to do in the heat, while I sit in the shade.
Id be ok with picking up a coyote ,just something.

I’ve yet to have any luck calling, so I won’t be of much help.   I do love trying though.  Keep at it and it will happen.  My experience with bear hunting is, feast or famine…..meaning I see 3-5 bears one day and nothing the next 3-5 days.   Not sure why that is??   I call my self the anti bear and my son is the bear whisperer.   If he is hunting….we will see bear.  If I am solo…..bears are safe.  Lol.

Do you have calling sequence,or e caller vs hand call.
Alot of what I read on the interwebs say loud and don't stop.
I didn't know that .
I'm just going to places I think have bears in the area.
But who really knows.
I've called in coyotes and 1 cougar ,but there always more hungry in the winter. My summer and fall skills are weak.

https://www.themeateater.com/listen/cutting-the-distance/ep-8-calling-all-black-bear-with-douglas-boze probably worth a listen if you have time. I've had two sits calling this season, no luck so far but definitely didn't call for long enough the first outting.
