Tri Star Shotguns....

Just picked one up for my 9yr old girl, (20ga auto, raptor youth camo)  upon a buddies recommendation who waterfowls *A LOT* and uses a tri-star and loves it


I haven't run it through its paces, but it's solid and well built.   I think it'll be great!

We shot sporting clays with a brand new O/U 20ga from WalMart. Shot great, felt very balanced and was attractive to look at. I believe they are lacking in the finish in regard to the machining of the receiver. Shavings appeared where metal met metal and things were not polished up very well. You would never see this on a Remington, Browning, Perrazi, or Ljutic. The TriStar Trap shotguns seem to shoot well, and are a bargain target shotgun for all the options you get. There are a few guys that have the trap guns at the local gun club, and they do well! For the price, I think they are a pretty good bet!

Both my daughter and wife shoot a 20ga automatic. They feed and fire any load fine. I've even used them on some brutal chukar trips that my little Monte avoided. Seven seasons of Willapa mud and they consistently go bang. CLP and a half case of dove loads to break them in. $250 if I recall

I have no experience with Tri Star but there have been a lot of threads on Shotgunworld.com about them.  It appears that most who have them really like them.  Most (if not all) of the haters have never owned one.

Don’t think you can get a tristar for $250 anymore, maybe 5 years ago. The vipers I saw at sportsman’s a couple months back were nearly $700!

Turkish guns seem to go through a cycle, they start out cheap, if it’s a good model they get really popular and the prices skyrocket, then the next cheap model comes along, and so on.

Log onto Trapshooters.com put Tri Star in the search field and you will have hours of reading. 

Just about every company is importing Turkish shotguns.

 I bought my son a Weatherby branded pump made in Turkey, it was a very sharp looking gun.  It lasted about 500 rounds.
 I have not shot a Tri Star.  I have helped an STCP squad out of Libby Mt try to piece their Tri Stars back together after the ejectors  broke while shooting handicap. 

 I have shot several CZ shotguns which are made in the same factory.  They look okay the trigger was horrible.

  I would not buy one, but I also shoot 15-18k 12ga a year.  If your looking for 100 rounds a year it should be fine.   

What is your intended use and model?  I have read that the semi auto ones are built a lot better than the trap guns

Just took the tristar 20ga auto out for a spin, 20 or so shots, 1 or 2 didn't fully eject causing malfunction

This is literally right out the box

Gonna clean and lube, I think it'll run good after that.

Still a bit heavy for my 9 yr old, but she dusted some clay

The action button is too stiff for her thumb, gotta grow into it some and gun break in more

I bought a 20 last year and set it up with a Spartan Precision stud for shooting of a tripod or the javelin bipod as a turkey gun for kids and gals. I found it doesn't eject certain types of cheap ammo while shooting clays. Get some AA's and 3" turkey loads, and it does great. Great semi for the money in my opinion.

I bought a semi 410 2 months ago. Ran 4 boxes of the cheapest shells I could find at sportsman's through it without precleaning, the gun shot and cycled flawlessly.  Plan to break it down and clean before waterfowl season and will be shooting it all season instead of the SBE2 that I've shot for years.

That is an odd link.  Most of the complaints look like the issue is mostly user oriented.  I've been considering a Tri Star semi auto and I don't think that anything on that site would impact that decision.

What type of ammo was an issue?  I've seen a lot of feed/function issues with promo Winchester ammo in various firearms.  Curious is this is more of the same or if it extends to other manufacturers.  The brass and plastic used in the Winchester promo line is overly thin and cheap.

I read the customer site also. One thing I noted is the US distributor isn't getting parts shipments from the factory(ies).    I have a friend who has one of the o/u's and his gun now sits in the gun safe.  He's looking for the next owner for his.

Shell issues not ejecting is due to steel base hulls, they don't expand and contract the same as brass.  This is a problem normally found on higher end guns with tight tolerances.  Typically promo shells stick.  You can clean up the throat with steel wool

Bought one for my daughter. Hour after I got it home and cleaned up we went out on a turkey hunt and we killed this pair of jakes. She loves the gun! For the money I just could not resist trying it. Waterfowl season this year will be the true test.
