Fantastic UL tent stakes...
« on: October 01, 2020, 11:24:18 AM »
So I picked up a set of tent stakes that I am truly impressed with.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MYZOKHJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

These things are 9 inches long.  They have a mushroom head and can take a pounding by a hammer or Rock to set if need be.

The core is Carbon fiber, and the shell is Aluminum.

They weigh in at 0.49 ounces each.  This is a shade heavier than some of the other light weight stakes out there (1/10 to 2/10's)  but having a 9 inch stake in soft or loose ground can be the difference between staying put, and pulling out.

MSR makes a 6 inch version that is lighter than pretty much anything else I have seen on the market (Perhaps even lighter than the titanium Shepard hook stakes).

They are far from cheap, but I love them!  I think they actually lift my pack up off the ground like helium when I pack them.

I use the MSR groundhog stakes and they've been amazing over the last 10 years.

Do you mind if I ask what kind of a tent you are using these on?

I have heard good things about those.  certainly cheaper.

I was just excited to find a 9 inch stake you can pound on with a hammer that was under 1/2 an ounce!

I am a tent collector....

I got them for my seek Cimarron.  But I have used them on my Big Agnus Fly creek too.

The MSR groundhog stakes have served me well. Those look nice, but I have a hard time stomaching $50 in tent stakes. Now...that MSR hammer in Amazon's suggested combo purchase looks handy. I wonder if it would suffice as an ice axe for the high hunt too? Pound stakes, open beers and axe some ice?
Hmmm....

The msr cyclones are pretty dang good as well....im all about being as light as possible but some items ya just need to pack alil extra...stakes is one of them...need a variety of styles and weights pending on the location of the shelter and the style of soil...and wind conditions 😳

When my all carbon steaks bust this winter I will be replacing them with the ops suggested

The seek tents are great...  the stakes they sent with it are the worst I have ever had!  I bent 1 to 2 every time i set it up.  2 broke.  I have never broken a stake before!

This is what sent me on the mission to upgrade.

The Msr carbon cores are over priced but I could not be happier!

@jackelope a hammer is no substitute for a REAL ice axe.

Only T-rated carbon fiber ice tools are sufficient for the high hunt.  Everyone knows this.

This is the one I used on the VII climb up into the basin where we found that bear, and also to dispatch the wounded animal.

I thought I was the only one that was destroying the seek outside stakes.  I think I've slowly replaced most of them.  It when I camp in designated campsites that have very hard-packed ground/gravel that is the problem. I use the Nine Inch Nail - steel stakes for car camping.  I might pick up a few of those MSR stakes for the trail trips.

I think they are hard to beat when it comes to length, weight and strength.

I find it hard to believe that Seek has such great tents, and they go cheap on the stakes.  Such a spendy tent with garbage stakes!
