Where to learn about Wolf hunting in MT
« on: October 21, 2020, 08:49:16 PM »
I will be moving to the Flathead valley, Kalispell/Whitefish area specifically in a few weeks. I am very interested in getting out into the woods and chasing wolves. It sounds like a real challenge and a real trophy if you connect. Where would I go to start researching the best/highest population areas? I don’t know the area like I do Washington, so just trying to figure out some resources. Not looking for any honey holes by any means.

Also, do you guys know of any good websites or forums for the area? Hunting, fishing, dirt biking, camping, etc.?

Looking forward to your responses!

I just moved to kalispell area. Most of the wolves are west of town. Find elk and wolves won't be to far. Send me a pm I would like to have a wolf hunting partner.

I would start by calling both the warden and bio for the area.  If you wait until a couple weeks after shoulder season you might be able to actually get in touch with them.

From there, drive around and hunt big game.  If they are around, you will hear them.  Hunting them is different, but I run into them regularly hunting big game - we are chasing the same thing after all.

If you are sight hunting them, start by finding where the herds are and they are often in the area.  This year, you can drive around the lowlands and see which fields consistently have game in them and then just glass.

Finally, talk with a rancher if you can, they are often quite happy to share wolf info.  Some of the BMA areas might have wolves, if they are Type 2 you can call for permission and ask about wolves in the area, again they will often bend over backwards if you are looking to shoot a wolf.
