Blacktail hunting around whitetails
« on: October 24, 2020, 03:00:39 AM »
So one of the areas I hunt is along the edges of the territory of the Columbian Whitetail. I have suspected some of the sign I have seen over the last few years has been the whitetail but until yesterday I never had eyes on one there. I did not have cams in there this year but in past years its chock full of blacktails. Lots of does and young bucks. Several big bucks start moving more in mid Oct.
I have seen quite a bit more fresh rubs now and ran into 3 bucks. A 1x2, 2x2, and a decent 3x3 that I would have gladly shot if it wasnt a whitetail.
Was kinda cool to see but I was wondering...
Does having the whitetail in the area affect the blacktail much? Do they displace them at all? Is there any habits they have that would help me key in on the blacktails when the whitetails are in the area?
Hopefully there are some SW Wa hunters here with this experience that can chime in.

I would say yes...I was watching a small piece of property and the whitetails came in a Definitely pushed out the blacktails...this was observed over a 3 year period

Sounds like you are in some prime habitat.
I would love it if there ever were enough of them to legally hunt in Washington.
.
I have only seen one Columbian whitetail buck in my life.
If there is enough of them to push blacktail out, and/or crossbreed, I say LET THEM.
.
As far as specific traits?
My only whitetail hunting has been in NW Washington, and it seems like ALL blacktail bucks act like mature whitetail.
.
Meaning they stay hidden and nocturnal for most of the year, while whitetail are easier to scout.
.
Looking for does won't seperate the species.
.
I would just enjoy hunting the area, and enjoy an experience most don't get.
.
Besides, according to the "experts", mule deer are a whitetail/blacktail mix....
Although it always seemed to me that mule/whitetail would result in blacktail.

The range of Columbian WT used to extend from the Columbia River up to the Southern Puget Lowlands.  Habitat alteration gradually reduced the range seen today.  Considering that genetic tests show that they are virtually identical to the WTs found in Eastern Oregon, it is surprising that they are not more invasive.  Studies on the population at the Julia Butler Hansen CWT refuge show that the males don't seem to disperse (like other deer populations) after becoming mature, they don't leave the island when they could easily do so.  In my mind, if you have to spend millions of taxpayer dollars to keep a  geographic strain (not genetically different ) of deer from going extinct, and they only show minimal response in population growth with all our management, then it may be time to let them have a go at it on their own.

Anyways, I found this regarding CWT/BT interaction.  Looks like a large population of CWT keep the blackies out.  It may have been that as their numbers declined across the original range of CWTs, BT overtook their territories:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Interspecific Interactions

At high densities, Columbian white-tailed deer appear to exclude Columbian black-tailed deer (Odocoileus
hemionus columbianus) from lowland riparian habitats (Smith 1987). However, black-tailed deer readily
occupy riparian lowlands when densities of white-tailed deer are reduced (Smith 1987). This can lead to
increased competition and potential hybridization (Davison 1979, Smith 1987, Gavin and May 1988,
Whitney 2001).

.
Explains my comment about easier to scout..
I'd see whitetail on my way to the woods...
Look all day for blacktail, and see whitetail on my way out...

Yup.  Me too - down in Skamokawa.  At least you can tell your wife you saw some deer without lying.   :chuckle:
