Musket caps vs 209 - POI difference?
« on: November 23, 2020, 05:36:10 AM »
Hey all,

Gearing up for late muzzleloader elk in WA and ID. In preparation for Idaho I recently sighted in my Knight UL with 385 grain Hornady Great Plains lead bullets, 100 grains by volume of 777 FF loose, and Musket caps.

I’ll be hunting a couple days of the WA season before heading to Idaho and my question is, if I were to use 209’s will I notice much of a point of impact difference between the primers? I’ll switch back to musket caps for ID so no worries there.

Let me know what you think.

Drew

I doubt if you will see any difference at all.

my experience is you wont notice a difference

I don't think I have ever had a musket cap fail, If its not broke don't try and fix it. :twocents:

Thanks for the replies guys. At some point I’ll have some time to experiment on the range and see if I notice an changes in POI between the primers. No time this week though. I’d imagine it would take a lot of constant moisture throughout a day of hunting to cause a musket cap to fail but those full plastic jacket 209’s sure are a confidence booster for the Wet Side.

Same here.  I've been using musket caps for almost 30 years and don't plan on changing anytime soon.

One does not hunt in order to kill; on the contrary, one kills in order to have hunted. If one were to present the sportsman with the death of the animal as a gift he would refuse it. What he is after is having to win it, to conquer the surly brute through his own effort and skill with all the extras that this carries with it: the immersion in the countryside, the healthfulness of the exercise, the distraction from his job. ~ Jose Ortega y Gasset

I've chronographed otherwise identical loads using 209 and musket caps to answer this exact question. I measured a slight velocity difference (less than 50fps) with the exact same load (but using different primers), but it was small enough that you shouldn't worry about it. I'd recommend going to the range to verify your POI before actually hunting, but you likely won't be able to tell the difference.

One of my hunting partners said when he switched to primers on his Knight Bighorn he went from 3" high at a 100 yards to 8" high. His sights are a peep on the rear and the  globe and crosshairs on the front. He claims accuracy with that set up is light years better than with fibre optics. Several articles written seem to back that up.
