Sub $100 pellet gun
« on: November 30, 2020, 07:29:28 PM »
Hi folks.  I have a woodpecker and squirrel problem (not COVID pandemic level) and want a pellet gun for assistance.  Was thinking the old .177/BB with the 10 pumps or whatever to get it to max velocity.  Is there a break action single shot .22Cal or something that costs a bit more but is “sweeter”?

I have a couple Crossman 760s, and a Gamo WisperCat, all are .177 cal.
If you have young-ones the Crossmans can be fun, while helping them learn how to handle a firearm, and you can limit the the power (number of pumps).
If you want something that is super efficient, fast and extremely quite (comes suppressed) the Gamo has no comparison, and costs a little over $100.

For what you described, the Gamo shines.
Fantastic pellet rifle for the money!

I have a tiny .22 cricket single shot that I'll sell you.  :)  Been shot about 5 times.  Just sits in my safe now that my kids are grown and they never really used it as they liked to shoot the bigger rifles I had.

Check Walmart for a 22 pelet gun.  I picked up an interchangeable barrel .177 -.22 a few years ago and just leave the 22 barrel on it.  I think with the 4 power scope included it was $99.  I would not buy the interchangeable barrel model again. Until I figured out how to keep it secured (plumbers tape), the set screw would back out due to vibration.  it shoots 900 fps in 22 Walmart should carry a good variety of pellets too, including the 22
May that for which I prepare never come to pass.

I have a Gamo Whisper (it doesn't, sounds like dropping a phone book in the kitchen), and a crossman piston, neither of which I'm impressed with as far as accuracy goes. Baseball to softball at 25 FEET. Sometimes bigger.

Seems back in the day the old pump up daisy and crossman shot their iron sights better. In fact I know they did. I remember getting golf ball groups at 25 feet.

I dunno what the deal is...  I'd sure like an accurate pellet rifle. Seems like a modern, high tech, piston driven .177 with a scope should one hole at 25 feet and do an inch or so at 25 YARDS. I sure haven't seen it yet.

Any insights would be appreciated!

Look up “artillery hold” when shooting piston air rifles on utube. It helped me. Also found that my pellet gun shoots some pellets better than others.

I get the same results from a Beeman I bought. The dang thing shoots really weird. The trigger is bad and it feels like it literally "jumps" when I shoot it. This is after shooting tens of thousands (millions maybe) of rounds through Daisies, Crosmans, Sheridans, etc. and being able to light matches with most of them.

Accuracy is all about the pellets.
I use Crossman Copperhead pointed pellets on both types of rifles.
Below is four shots I just took with one of the Crossman 760s (not anything close to the accuracy of the Gamo) at 30 ft, across my garage, offhand, 4 pumps.
