Late season archery elk in 603
« on: December 04, 2020, 08:17:32 AM »
Thoughts on spending time looking for elk in 603 this time of year? I’m in PA and looking for somewhere to go that’s closer than Clearwater. If I don’t run into an elk maybe get lucky and find a blacktail? Or ditch the idea and start thinking about steelhead.... I’ve been hunting whitetail in the south my whole life so both species up here are new to me. I know they’re both considered tough animals to kill but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to try. Thanks in advance for any info and thoughts. Sorry if this topic has already been addressed. New to the forum...

I think a lot of the elk in there are probably hiding out on private land this late in the season.  Some of the herds aren't all that far from town, like the one along the Elwha River or the one that hangs out by the truck scales.  Be tough to find when they actually do pop out on some public.  As you get farther west, there is a bit more land to hunt and in bigger chunks.  Occasionally I hear of elk taken on the DNR stuff before lake Crescent, but most seem to be on the lands west out by 113.  There is some Forest Circus land in there--connects 101 to 112, Bear creek to twin rivers.  Others might have seen elk or elk sign--all I seen in there are deer and bear, especially along the powerline road.
