First wood duck
« on: January 06, 2021, 05:26:19 PM »
Water was soo high today.  All the birds were in the flooded woods and none were flying.  I kayaked around until I heard them then made a stalk on them.  Got this guy before he made out of the small window of trees I could see through.  Then all hell broke loose.  LOL must have been close to a hundred birds in there.

beautiful duck...congrats...only shot i ever had at one of those landed just at daybreak as i was sitting on a 1/2 submerged log with a small spread in front of me..  i literally could have almost reached out and grabbed it as it swam around me as i was sitting on that log.  couldn't bring myself to shoot it as it was 5 feet from me before it figured out something wasn't right and flew directly behind me through the trees

Those ducks have always been on my bucket list, can’t believe how beautiful they are.  I swear I’m getting old, because now I’m not sure I could kill one, just so cool.  Nice job though, beautiful.

Not only are Woodies awesome looking, they're also one of the best eating.

Thanks guys.  Mounting it is not in the cards right now so I will have to wait for the next one.  Good healthy breast on it though for a smaller sized duck.

In 30+ years of duck hunting I have never seen one in the field...other than on the pond at my farm...personally wouldn't shoot one for that reason but good for you, that is awesome  I would preserve it until I could get it mounted though.

Got another one today. I forgot my call in the truck and didnt realize until i had already kayaked in about an hour. Set up decoys in a juicy spot and watched birds fly all morning with no way to get their attention. Wood duck drake and hen decided to drop in next to the kayak.

I have seen a few but if they are that rare I might let them pass from now on.  I put the second one in the freezer.  I will check around on prices and see if its doable.

I'm not sure they are that rare...it is probably more about location. Super cool looking bird!!!!

I've shot a few Woodies. I'll pass on 99% of them. I don't like having to skin a duck. I think they are on par with Bluebills and Scaup.
