School me on Roosevelt winter rainbows.
« on: January 06, 2021, 06:52:14 PM »
I don't often ask for help but man I need a bit of fishing in my life and want to broaden my horizons.  Winter bank fishing for some fat rainbows sounds like fun. So what are the hot tips and tricks to catch some trout? Looking around keller ferry but open to suggestions. Thanks guys  :hello:

I use about a 4 foot leader size 10 gamagatsu treble hook using a bait needle put a couple power eggs above the hook garlic powerbait on the hook. Best tip though from me is dont cast out too far they are in shallow 10 feet or so sometime I actually can see my bait.

Fantastic guys! Thank you very much! I'm excited for some winter camping and river time. Thinking next weekend for my first run.....if the kids will let me off the hook from skiing  :chuckle:

Imagine you’re fishing the I 82 ponds except it’s winter, and it’s not the I82 ponds it’s Lake Roosevelt.  :chuckle:

Seriously, same rules apply , little heavier line and warmer clothes. Couple good spots just above Chief Joe if you end up down that way.
Just tend your own and live.

Been at it for years since I was young pup. Now I take my young pups along for the ride.
Was there a few weeks back. Water was high but we managed several fish with a couple 20” for the boys. Hot bite was pink with orange power eggs. We threw everything at them and they kept at that combo. A little secret sauce never hurts too 😉
I like to use 4lb test and the ultra light rod. Fights like a steelhead with the light set up.
fear no fish!!

Karl it is pretty simple. I live not far from Keller but have seen a number of ways work successfully. Usually a worm and marshmallow and scent work with a slip sinker and four foot leader. Same setup replace the marshmallow with power bait. Or slip sinker with four foot leader and a sinker tipped with power bait. PM if you want more specifics with a spot to try at Keller.

I fish for them like I fish for steelhead.. Slip bobber, jig , and shrimp. Or cast a Krocodile in Bikini Pearl color. I have a two rod permit so I have one rod with orange power nugget tipped with a white power egg and the other rod the slip bobber. Of course I fish further north than Keller. Watch out for "native" redside.

I use one of two different setups.

Steelhead size slip bobber set at 10-14' with half a worm and krill scent on a #8 baitholder.  Cast it out as far as you can and it will slowly drift downstream.

Or

Egg sinker, swivel, 4' leader, two marshmallows in either pink or green, half of worm and shrimp or krill scent on a #8 baitholder.  Cast it out as far as you can.

Use your steelhead rod and cast out as far as you can!!  That seems to be critical where I fish.  I have brought a lot of people down there and usually will out fish them 2:1 because they didn't listen and only brought their trout rod and can't cast out that far.

I fish Fort Spokane.

You can't go wrong with the rigs everyone else has already mentioned. Float bait 4' off the bottom, or run a steelhead bobber and jig set up. I like to squirt a little Mike's garlic gel scent on my worm and mallow. Sometimes I'll cast and retrieve a #3 Blue Fox, or a perch pattern floating Rapala while the kids have bait sitting out there.
