Just some picts of bird dogs standing!
« on: January 23, 2021, 09:56:15 AM »
With hunting season winding down, and trial season winding up, it’s time to start getting dogs ready for trial season.  I have one dog that will be on the Brittany AA circuit running 1hr championships, another that will stay home and run the local weekend trials, and one that’s with the trainer just getting going.  Im crossing my fingers we have a good season. Trials are a great way to extend the time we get to play “bird games” with the dogs.  With any luck, we will get a placement of two.

Out of curiosity, in the second photograph, there is an orange belt on the stomach area of your dog.  What is that?  I know it can't be a chastity belt!  Serious question.

It's an ecollar, could be several training reasons, but most likely he's firming up whoa.

Dog prolly not quite steady enough on flush yet, takes a ton of discipline for them not to chase tbe bird, and for trials they gotta be rock steady.

It’s an E-collar.  Some people will transition the collar to the neck after breaking, but I leave it there.  The dog is rock solid on whoa, and steady 99% of the time, but none the less, it’s still a dog.  With the collar around the flank you can make light corrections  around birds and you’ll have less chance of blinking, plus it keeps their style. KFHunter is correct, in trials, dogs have to be 100% steady.  I don’t say a thing when a dog starts to break on a bird.  Just a quick tap on the collar, and they stop. A hate when guys are screaming “whoa” all the time at their dogs.
