300 wsm powder
« on: January 23, 2021, 03:34:39 PM »
Curious what people use for 300wsm powder pushing 180 grain pills.  I was surprised by the choices the book gives and just curious what others have had luck with.  I have h4350, h4831, h414 (book recommends).

Thanks.

I started off with Magpro and had great results.  Had family pickup 8 pounds in Montana. Haven't got any now.

H4831sc for 185s, 7828 worked well too and very consistent speeds with the 215s but was hitting too much pressure at low speeds.

Switching to H4350 when I rebarrel.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

I’ll be hitting the range with h4350 first.  If I don’t get the results I like I will try h4831 or h414....this powder surprised me to see but it shows promise based off the book pressures and velocities.  Very similar to hybrid 100v which is a powder that apparently works well.

180s is about the max weight I'd go with h4350. Over 180gn the slower powders will give you better velocity. H4831 works really well with the heavier bullets in the wsm. Haven't tried it with lighter bullets. H4350 should work great.

Given the great results reported with 215 Bergers why are you using 180’s?   I know you need a long action for 215’s/ 210’s and this might be the reason.   Thinking about a 300 wsm build and wondering.

For what you have H4350 with Fed 210 or cci 200/BR2.  I have a XM action and with 210’s shoot RL23 and BR2’s.  3.150.

The rifle I’m loading for won’t accept long bullets due to the magazine.  It is also my sons rifle so 180s are perfect.  He took his first mule deer with it this year at 308 yards.   It is a savage ultralite and the magazine is definitely a limiting factor.

My 300 win mag shoots 212 super well so we will keep that rifle running heavies.  Variety is the spice of life.  :chuckle:

I am super impressed with how well the savage shoots factor nosler 180 grain accubonds.  I’m sure I can make it shoot even better with the same bullet.  It should be a super accurate rifle for my son with the hand loads I’m working on.

I really liked Reloader 17 in my 270 WSM

Play with it in the summer and winter... In my experience RL17 is EXTREMELY temperature sensitive... like 1.5fps per degree.

That’s what I found and had dangerous pressure signs offer working a load in the winter and shooting it in the summer.  Sold the 8lbs I had and won’t use it again.

17,19,22,26 are all temp sensitive. Ive burned 40 or so pounds of h4831sc in my wsm's and its really been the ticket. Recently been playing with 215 and 230 bergers with Viht n565 and it has also been performing well.

RL-19 at about max behind 180 TSX's worked well in my Kimber Montana at 2.78", but that was 12 years ago when I loaded them.  It really likes 130 TTSX bullets also.  I am not a long range hunter so I don't really care about the BC and the lighter bullets have quite a bit less recoil. :twocents:
