hey! glad to see another new guy come aboard! im in my 3rd season, 95% self taught. its a blast, great bonding time i get to have with my daughter and learn a whole new part of the trade. have to keep our roots strong!
a few suggestions if youre not able to physically meet up with anyone around you:
1-ask qs here. most everyone has and is very helpful and knowledgeable. its usually just a few hours at most for your questions to get picked up and answered if you ask on the forum. ive thought about starting a running thread on trapping qs rather than a new topic everytime, maybe its time to do that.
2-there are some great youtube vidoes out there. coon creek outdoors, 330maniac, trapper j, im sure there are a ton more, but these guys have really helped me in the process. lots of little tricks and tips you can glean from watching the videos.
3-honestly just getting traps out and getting the experience. it can be frustrating, ive had quite a few dead sets while in the learning process but ive also had a lot of homeruns when checking. youll learn as you go what works and what doesnt. just like deer hunting. look for sign, read the sign, and set on the sign. you cant catch anything if you dont have traps out. get them out!
4-i dont know what your schedule is or area is, but i would suggest starting with water sets. you can leave them out for up to 3 days and i think maybe higher percentage of a catch when youre starting out. good way to get rolling.
keep at it. good luck, have fun. youll get better as time goes on. asks qs as you need, i always am. keep us posted with your catches!
