Skunk on the line
« on: February 14, 2021, 07:29:24 PM »
Trapped my first skunk. I’ve heard that they become more idle in the winter so it’s more unusual to see them, but perhaps he was looking for a mate.
It was a very slow and careful skinning, but no glands were nicked in the process.  The mask helped during this. Excited to have a cased skunk wall hanger in a month or two.   :chuckle:

Dang Dan11011, thats a dandy!
I think you should send that pic to Nay Say Jay. Then he may let us have a rondevous when he sees how "safe" trappers are by masking up.

Good.
You won't see much info on this Internet forum on trapping cats in E. Wa. For good reason. But Ill give you this tid bit. You've earned it already!
We have perfect snow conditions now. Go out and find some cats tracks. Youll be back home before lunch. Now at home wire your skunk carcass in the back of your cat cage. Take it to your predetermined location that the cats have showed you. Set your cage along your cat trail and protect it from snowmelt, freezing rain. Be patient. Theres other nuances about the set up we could discuss, but, this is the basics. Plan ahead and dont leave tracks or lolly gag along the road. Get in get out.

Loup,

Thanks for all the insight. I’m regretting it now, but I threw the carcass for the coyotes after I skinned it because I was so tired of the smell at that point. But I really should have saved it and put it in my cat cage.

I’ve got some inedible deer parts from my deer this year in my cat cage but haven’t had any luck. Don’t think it’s stinky enough. Got some lure and bait as well though.

Thanks for the tips. I’ll know what to do next time if I catch another one.

Too bad. But oh, you'll catch another....
Now a skinned skunk in the cage is good for one cat. Youll come back and you'll have a big tom sleepin it off in the cage and not a single skunk bone in there with him.
If you have bait you've got confidence in but maybe not sure of your location. Set your cage with whatever bait. Hang a skinned skunk up in a bushy tree 40-50 feet away. Out of sight of birds or they will eat your skunk. Hang a feather in front of cage so its visable from skunk tree.
I remember I moved a cage to three different locations. Every time I moved it I cut down the skunk and took it with cage to new location. That skunk accounted for 4 cats in three locations. It was finally in such bad shape I left it behind. We had a good run though.
