Go-To Pack
« on: April 21, 2009, 09:53:02 PM »
I need a new hunting pack.  What do you guys use / prefer?

I prefer lightweight, frameless, and on the small side.

I have a badlands superday pack and I can honestly say that it is probably one of the best pieces of hunting equipment that I have.  It is frameless and is a great size for holding everything that you need.  It is small enough that it is not heavy but big enough that if you needed to you could pack out a quarter with it.

I own a Nimrod. Easily the most comfortable pack I have ever worn. I can't imagine wanting a different pack. Plus, they are made here in Washington.

Badlands, best pack I've even owned.  Besides you can't beat the warranty, unconditional repair or replacement.

So, I like the Badlands packs.  But I'm debating between the 2200 and the SuperDay.

Any thoughts...

I just bought the Badlands 2200 and I absolutely love it.  The functionality of it is just awesome and it will allow me to pack an animal out with the internal frame if need be.  I would just go try them on and see what fits you the best because each fits a little different.

X2 on Badlands. I have the 2200, great pack...tough as nails. Badlands has a great warrenty too. Go check it out at a sporting goods store and load it up (with permission) with stuff at the store the bat wing design is not for everyone.

One of my buddies got a Superday last season.  Very nice little pack with a ton of pockets for organization of gear.  I really like the looks of it.  Only one complaint, we hunted hard in the rain and everything got wet.

I just bought the Badlands 2200.  I was debating between that and the Superday.  I went with the 2200 for a couple reasons.  The first was I liked the ability to turn the pack to the front, fold down, and get inside without ever taking it off.  The second was the headrest.  Nice feature when you want to take a quick break from hiking all day.  Either way you go you can't go wrong.  Both packs have a ton of storage space and both feel great.  I can't wait to get mine out this season!!!  :twocents:

I have an Eberlestock "Just One" and have been happy with it, when I've used it, which hasn't been often. It's too much pack for most of the hunting I do but when I do need to carry a lot it works out great. I can carry out an entire boned out deer in it as well. The rifle scabbard sure comes in handy for those early morning hikes in the dark.

well i own a nimrod and love it.  they are made here in WA state and the people are all top notch.  i had the chance to talk briefly to a few of them at teh big horn show here in spokane this year.  my nimrods very flexible for a variety of applications and the quality is awesome!  lifetime warranty of all parts and workmanship i do believe.  anyways id recomend a nimrod to anyone. the pack is light and has alot of storage space and well thought out compartments.

Nimrod is actually based in my hometown (Cashmere), about 1.5 miles from my parent's house, and I still can't justify paying the extra money for one over a Badlands.  Plus, the Badlands warranty covers EVERYTHING, regardless of rhyme or reason.  Nimrod's covers workmanship, which is great, but if that pack starts to wear out over time, that's tough luck.

I'll echo all of the other votes here for a Badlands pack. I've got two, because I liked the first one so much.  My day pack that got me hooked on Badlands producs is a Hypervent.  This pack is hands down the most comfortable, nimble, can't tell its there pack I've ever owned.  It beats the non-hunting packs from REI I've owned, Gregory, Arc'teryx, etc.  The thing is simply bulletproof; I can't say enough about it.

So recently I bought the Badlands 4500, I got it in the mail last night, and I'm really impressed so far. Can't wait to get out and use it.

I'm cheap and bought a camelbak Ranger.  No complaints with it at all.  I spent the extra money on a good pack frame.

Rocky Mountain Yukon.  Both of my partners use one as well.  If you want a "fanny" style pack with shoulder straps it makes for a good pack.  Made and designed in southern Idaho.  Bought mine at the owner's shop in Pocatello/Chubbuck; he's a serious hunter and knows his gear.  The Yukon holds a ton of gear--about 1900 cu. in.  We added their stuff sack and organizer pockets for more out-board room.

The advantage of a lower riding pack is that when you bend over to duck brush, the pack doesn't just ride up to where your head was and snag the brush.  That was the main reason we migrated to that style pack.  We were hunting brushy wet-side and got tired of snagging the back-pack.

If you want a great day pack get the eberlestock x1 or the j104. Once you have hauled in a rifle scabbard you will not go back. Best thing I have ever had. The " just one" is huge and is better suited for a bivy camp or something but if you plan on hiking mile after mile and dont want to make multiple trips packing an animal the dragonfly may be the way to go. Either way i am sure you will end up with a great pack.

I got a great deal on a Badlands 2800.  It's a little bigger than I intended, but I COULD NOT pass up the price ($100 shipped to my door  :IBCOOL:).

I'm going to give it a try this summer and see how I like it.

I also picked up a OGIO Day Pack on CamoFire for $30.00 so that I have an option for a smaller pack.

I'll let you guys know how they work out.

Blacks Creek makes good packs as well, I ended up with a canadian over the Badlands last summer when I was pack shopping.

regaurdless of size Badlands all the way. I bought the wrong size from Cabelas and a year later Badlands let me trade it in for a medium, no questions or cost except shipping :)

Badlands 2800 here.  Can't go wrong with Badlands, Eberlestock or Blacks Creek.  All very nice packs.  The warranty on the Badlands was a real plus.
Look man, some times you just gotta roll the dice
