Broken Skeg Yamaha 8hp - need advice
« on: June 05, 2021, 09:27:05 AM »
Hi all.

I have Yamaha 8MSHZ (2 stroke, short shaft, 2001 ) with broken skeg. Want to fix it to have a protection for the propeller.
Looks like my options are either welding or skeg protector. Welding can cause overheating and another set of problems, and I can't find skeg protector for such small engine and also I'm not sure if I have enough skeg left for the screws.

I inclined towards the protector so far (if I can find one). What would be your opinion/advise?

I'm nearby Seattle, Washington - would appreciate contacts of a trusted welder or shop who can help me.

Thank you in advance!

I think you are SOL on the skeg protector. Nothing is left to protect. A marine shop should be able to cut and weld on a new piece for you.

Your best bet may be to find a donor engine and swap lowers.  If you find one not running, it will probably be the same price as trying to hire someone to weld something up on that one.

Chris Hoover at Strongweld in Lakewood is very good.

Either

1.  Use it as is.  It will work find unless you run aground, then you need a new prop.
2.   Prop guard - looks like you have enough left to bolt to.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I've decided to use it as is and look for a spare lower unit.
