Headed to SD first week Nov.

Friend and I are taking the trip to SD to pheasant hunt. Driving from Spokane. Any info would help. What has been your experience if you have been.

Don’t have high expectations.  Yes, it can be good, but the numbers are skewed due to the put and take lodges.  SD isn’t really all that.  Download onyx, and that will really help…. I haven’t hunted SD since I moved to CO.  It’s and 8hr drive vs 3 hours to KS, and I have no need to drive the extra 5 hours.  Good luck and have fun, but don’t expected too much.

I'm headed there at the same time.  Crops are coming out early this year, so that won't be a problem.  Try to get away from any of the larger towns.  Anything close to town gets hammered.  Get away from I-90 for the same reason.  Large groups are better, but I've done it solo a couple of times, and done well.  You can't start hunting until 10, so get the hunting atlas, and do some scouting for the first few hours of the day.  Try to find CRP fields surrounded by harvested crops, and hunt the ditches.  A lot of the ditches will probably be mowed this year because of the drought, so the waterfowl production areas may be worth checking for some thirsty pheasant.  If you have some extra cash try paying an access fee for a day.

It's not like you see on TV every time you go out, but I have had enough of those days to keep me going back.

Cabelas Tulalip had a few yesterday, I didn't look close enough to see what.  Very few boxes.

Don’t spend the money on 3” 20 ammo.  Just get 2 3/4” and 1oz of #5’s at about 1200fps and call it a day. Hell, these December SD birds got crushed by 7/8oz of #5’s at only 1125fps from a 100yr old gun.  All the new super ammo is marketing.

Any advantage to buying my SD lic on line, or should we just wait until we get to our destination?

You'll be going through Billings I assume.  Check with Scheels there.  Their Fargo, ND store was flush with shotgun ammo last month.  Didn't check the Cabelas in Billings.  It is right next to I90.  Could be another source for you.
Look man, some times you just gotta roll the dice

The last few weeks have been very nit or miss. They’ll have some then it’s gone. The last couple weeks they’ve had lots of 2-3/4” 20 gauge. If you depend on it you might be disappointed
