What a deer season! Three 1st yr hunters successful, then me.

I had a goal this deer season to get my daughters their 1st bucks ever for their 1st yr hunting. Then our good friends asked if I'd take their son out (11 yrs old) for his 1st yr, so I said heck ya to that as well. He was limited to 2 days because of football and my schedule. So my goal became to get 3 kids their first bucks....easy right!? Well I posted the success stories of my daughters earlier. Today was Coopers turn, we started out this morning glassing a clear cut I was certain there'd be a deer in, well there wasn't. The weather was not what you'd call good for blacktail success being clear, sunny, and zero wind. We tried walking some bigger timber since it would be our quietest chance walking. It was still noisy as heck, every tiny twig and leaf could be heard from a mile away. I told Cooper, we're going to have to get lucky today and try to catch a dumb buck in a cut to have success. So we hopped back in the truck and started out the road running through the big timber we just walked through. A deer jumped out on the road and ran in front of us for a bit, then out of site ahead. Dumb doe, then we rounded the corner and it's still running down the road 75 yards ahead of us and stops. So I stop thinking maybe, just maybe there's a buck near by. I toss my binoculars up to look at the "doe" and swear I see bone on it's head. I tell Cooper to get out, it might actually be a buck. He loads up and sits in the road, me still glassing it, he's whispering "is it, is it". I say hold on, I gotta be 100%. It's head is facing away from us and I can't see antlers. Suddenly it turns left, and yep, it's got small spikes. The words "ya, it's a buck" barely finished coming out of my mouth and Cooper smoked it with my girls 7mm-08. We drive up to where it was standing and it was 10 yards down the bank dead. Not a big buck at all, but Cooper was more than thrilled. Mission accomplished! 3 1st yr hunters, 3 bucks! I ended up shooting a spike myself the last hour of my season. I'll be in Idaho during extended buck here, and I don't like eating tags. I know one thing, these kids are hooked!

Gotta get a euro done on those tiny little spikes. One of my favorite euro skulls is a deer that had similar spikes. Came out of the ground looking like a little devil buck. I'll see if I can dig up the link to the post I put on here about it a while back.
Found the link to my old post with the spike euro I did by just burying it in my rain garden and letting the bugs do their thing.

You'll be rewarded with awesome karma in the future!
Congrats to the kids; but more importantly, I thank you for the time you volunteered to invest in the future of hunting itself to expose these kids to some SAFE, fun, educational, and successful outings!
