Coon hunting Western WA
« on: November 16, 2021, 09:03:09 AM »
Hello,

I'm just getting into hunting with hounds, and have a few pups that i've been training on drags and live caged coons in my yard.

I live near arlington smokey point area and am researching areas to take my dogs to track and run live coons. Does anyone have experience coon hunting around the lake cavanaugh area in dnr land (nearer to granstrom rd, or perhaps N brooks creek/whitman rd area), or along 530 heading east to darrington? Or possibly down along mountain loop highway near granite falls? I know some guys who used to coon hunt along the south skagit highway, but on the wdfw hunt planner it looks like there's only a few small pockets of dnr or national forest land.

Do folks around here mostly do coon spotting from their rigs then let the dogs chase or just take a walk through the woods and let the dogs search for a track? My dogs have a "find the track" command down pretty well, but I wonder how well it will translate outside of my property.

Any other tips are much appreciated.

Thanks

Just a thought, but you should remove the part about training your pups on caged coons as that is illegal in WA.

Most guys will free cast their dogs and let the dogs range out and find a coon track to follow.  Some guys have dogs experienced enough to rig off of their dog box, or they will pick up a track while roading their dogs.

I know there are a TON of racoons in state land up off Deep Creek in 501.
Thin a few out and the Turkey hunting might improve..
