Anyone ever do a Colorado Drop Camp hunt?
« on: December 28, 2021, 07:38:27 AM »
Didn’t get any tags for Idaho this year, and Lord knows that my 21 Washington points will probably just net me a disappointing donation to WDFW again. I’m kicking around the idea of doing a drop camp hunt someplace where I can buy an OTC tag. Colorado looks to be the best option so far. Anyone have any experience with a hunt like that?  Any recommendations?  Anyone I should avoid?
Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.  That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Looking at the same options for 2022, or 2023. Have reached out to a few, but no responses, so I will begin calling after the first of the year. Looked at multiple states for this type of hunt, and Colorado does seem to be the best option for OTC - second or third week.

Routine stuff like ask for pics and success pics from drop camps with names and contact them.  Deluxe camp pics and success pics likely wont be the same as drop camp.  Be sure and contact others from outfitters drop camp references, previous season especially.

Not in Colorado but buddy has done one in Colorado for deer once and elk.  Ive only dropped here.  Colorado was a bust for my friend as his party was dumped where they couldnt interfere with deluxe camps.  They later learned their drop experience was quite the norm.  Not always but often enough you need to be extra diligent in obtaining info and checking it.  This is only my personal suggestion based on the little I know and is in no way intended to suggest all outfitters operate that way, because I know they dont.   :twocents:

I haven't done a drop camp with them but I hunted in a bit farther down the trail from the San Juan Outfitters guided camp and had several occasions to chat with them and they seemed like a good bunch. Their website shows that they still do drop camps so you might give them a call.
