Monolithic bullets and velocity
« on: March 23, 2022, 01:59:44 PM »
OK, I'm at work, so doing any real looking up of info is kind of difficult. What's the opinion of the group on velocity and monolithic bullet. What FPS would be minimum for proper expansion. I suspect regardless of brand, they are all around the same, in resect to velocity=expansion.

I'm no expert, but with lead core bullets you want high weight for penetration. With monolithic bullets you want lighter bullets so that you don't drop below the expansion threshold. Penetration is not an issue with monoliths. The copper bullets I've read about are listed at 1900 fps minimum for expansion.

They are all slightly different but I would say less than 1700 fps is not optimal.   Hammer hunters suggest 1800 fps though some YouTube guys show good expansion at 1600 without shedding the pedals.

Monolithic bullets like speed so you make up for mass when you push them harder.  The hammer hunters I shoot are generally 10-15% lighter than I would normally hoot but are running ~150 fps faster.

124 gr in a 6.5 creed at 2850fps
174 gr in a 300RUM 3300 fps
260 gr in a 338 lapua 3050 fps
101 gr in a 7mm-08 3100 fps.

Just to mention a few.  I don’t know if you can push the other monolythic bullets as fast due to the increased baring surface…..never tried.

Cutting edge says 1200 FPS for their laser line. 1600 for the mth.   Badlands recommend 1800.   They all are a little different and imo also depends on rpm
