2022 Bull Moose Tag Kettle Range / East Okanogan
« on: June 20, 2022, 09:35:46 PM »
Hello all,

I was lucky enough to draw an any moose tag for the Kettle Range / East Okanogan Units. I see that I am not the only to have reached out to the hunting-washington community on this subject this year. But, I'm excited to start my own research and to begin planning some scouting trips. I’m definitely out of my element hunting for this species. As such, any advice or information that you’re willing to share for moose hunting in units 101, 105, and 204 would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Awesome! And nice bull in your avatar pic. What’s the story on that one?

Are you able to do much scouting for the moose? I’ve seen a few in for short time around the 204. They are out there! Tough place to spot and stock. Most I’ve seen have just been driving the roads or on my cameras.

Thanks The100Road, that was a 330” bull that I harvested during the 2016 archery season in the Tucannon Unit.

BTW, as somewhat of a newbie, I do apologize for not stating that I am willing to share information about various areas that I have knowledge about. My experience is limited to hunting elk and deer. In WA, I have solid information about the Tucannon and Dayton units for elk, and about the Pearrygin and Chewuch units for mule deer. Also, I’ve hunted successfully in OR, WY, MT, and UT.

Back to the moose scouting. Yes, I am definitely planning at least 2 or 3 scouting trips over there. Of course, I would like to make the most of those cross-state trips due to the price of diesel. So I have begun gathering some information on spots to check out. It sounds like the moose move around a lot and that some areas fairly brushy, making glassing tough. So it seems like the more areas to check out the better, with some boots on the ground too.

There are a lot of threads on here with great tips for moose hunting. Use the search function and read through those. As you scout, come back with specific questions and people will help. Good luck with your tag and have fun. Keep us all updated

Thank you for the advice Vandeman17. Perhaps … as luck would have it I did do a lot of research last night of past threads for this hunt last night. I did find quite a few possible areas to scout, but I am assuming that the information doesn’t change when someone PM’s you vs. when they post publicly. Anyway, I do have some e-scouting to perform on those locations and to check on the possible impact wildfires since those areas were posted. When I’ve narrowed down my focus areas a bit, I’ll be back. Right now, I am just trying to make the most of my literal state crisscross scouting trips due the unfortunate price of diesel fuel. Last, does anybody know if snow is Ty it pretty much all gone?

You shouldn't have any trouble with snow in any moosey area right now.

Sorry… something did not come out quite right on my last reply. I meant to ask does anybody know if access is limited right now over there due to snow at the 3000 to 5000 foot level, or is it still pretty much all gone?

Look at the DOT camera on Sherman Pass that will give you answers.

I have a tag as well, if you haven't been scouting yet I strongly suggest just starting by driving the units and finding an area you enjoy being. I spent 3 days up there this past weekend and sign was scattered pretty evenly, we covered a big portion of all 3 units just rallying through drainage after drainage to see how it compared in real life to what it looked like on the maps. My boys and I have all shot bears in 101, so I'm somewhat familiar with the area and have some drainages we've seen moose in.

Right now with the heat, scouting is pretty tough to lay eyes on moose. It seemed like most of them were yarded up in an Alder fort in the shade with some access to lay in the water. Maybe I'll bump into you, I typically drive a 4 door Wrangler, dark grey.
