Returning Montana elk permit
« on: June 26, 2022, 07:38:06 AM »
Has anyone drawn a Montana elk permit that they ended up returning? If so, did they give you your points back or did you still lose them?

I don’t think they give you your points back based on this from their website

“Preference points and bonus points cannot be reinstated due to refund of the licenses.”

Dang I thought that would be the case but couldn’t find anything. Oh well, we are just trying to decide between 80% refund to return the general tag or see if we can return just the permit. Thank you

Definitely worth an email to them for verification though. They’ve always been quick to respond to me.

Yep I plan to call tomorrow to discuss the circumstances and check our options. We will see how it goes

Just got off the phone with Montana. Sounds like if we want to keep our deer tag, we have to keep our elk tag. They won't refund just the elk portion which seems backwards to me.

Is it the combo license?

Yes we put in for deer/elk combo and selected the option to return our elk tag if we didn't draw the permit. I don't really get why we can't return just one considering if a guy had applied for only the elk combo, he could return it. It would go back into the returned pool and the state would keep the 20% so this would be the same or actually the state would make more

It’s tough to figure why they have some of the rules they do. THere’s no doubt they’d sell the tag again
