Dave Workman,
Thank you for the comments.
Your subject is one of those hunting traditions that will fade for me too quickly but hopefully, the kids and grands will have the same opportunities to carry the torch.

On a side note...
I'm very fond of my Mark IV as it's the most utilized firearm on my homestead. Also, that's a very fine contribution you made with your article in AHG.

I am humbled and grateful for your kind remarks. Glad you enjoyed the American Handgunner column. Let the editor know.   ;)

I dont normally hunt higher than sea level. I see my fair share of grouse. When practical I use a pistol. This year we are elk hunting 5K plus. Is it worth my while to bring a pistol for grouse?

Absolutely! Blue grouse actually winter up higher, eating needles when there's nothing else available.

Great thread!!!

Haven't hunted anything since 2015. This may have lit a match. A hunting buddy of mine and myself did this many moons ago. Head shots only contest. I'm just going to say Bob was pretty handy with his old Buckmark
Hey! I'm not a complete idiot I have parts missing. Though sometimes I wonder.

I use my Contender with a .410 barrel more often than not, for grouse, rabbits, etc. It can be a little inconsistent, depending on shell length and load but, has worked well for me over the years. I have used a Mark IV in the past as well.

Gonna give it hell this weekend with this one. My dad’s, handed down to me.

Are y'all using snake shot out of your pistols for them? Bumped into a couple groups this weekend and it has me considering bringing the .22 out with me. Coworker mentioned the snake shot but it looks like the pattern gets pretty wide past 10'.

I use regular .22 round tip bullets.  Occasionally hollow points, but the round tip does less damage and dispatches them equally well in my experience.

I use my Ruger single six .22 with the .22 mag cylinder in it loaded with shot. The .22 long rifle cylinder is worthless with birdshot. Wouldn't kill a mouse at 2 ft.
