Do these bears look big?
« on: July 16, 2022, 08:03:17 PM »
I caught some pictures of some bears on a camera. Some of them definitely don't look too big, but the first one looks pretty decent. I'm a new hunter, so just curious to get the opinions of some more experiences folks out there. These bears all passed the camera around 10-20 feet away.

And bear #3. I got plenty more pictures, but I'm not sure how to tell if they are different from each other. I'm confidant that these are three different ones though, and that first bear looks big to me. West side, and the cameras dates are correct, but the time is 12 hours off.

Average to slightly above average on bear number two.  Definitely big enough to kill.

To me the first 1 and the 2nd look like the same bear.  Tough to tell with day and dusk picks though.  All 3 are the same size which are not big but worth a bullet.  Like was said before average but worth a bullet.

None of them look that big to me, but cool to get them on camera.

They all look like adults, but none of them are monsters. But why does it matter? If its an adult without a cub I would take it given the opportunity.

Second bear looks good, but the other one is a cub.
Probably taste good, and you can shoot them both.

X2 on that.

I though Bear 2, looked good, unless you are looking for a record, or a decent mount, shoot the first one you see.

Help out our deer and elk, blast the first one you see without cubs, then get your second tag and be picky if you'd like!

Here a pretty good one. I’m hoping to finally get this guy I have been playing a game of chess with for three years. But if he doesn’t show in the first few days I’m taking anything legal to get one of my tags filled and then I can refocus on a big one.

Double  :yeah:

It’s not like deer/elk taking the youngest hurts the herd, no shortage of bears in his state especially after spring seasons have been closed.

No, not really.   You'll save some fawns and have some good eats, but if its trophy potential you are after the answer is no.

First bear is very small 100 lbs? Next 2 or maybe average to a little below for an Idaho spring bear in my opinion

With only one picture like that it’s hard to tell, but the second kinda looks like an old sow to me.  If there’s other pics of it that could change my mind.  Or a young boar that’s going to have a big block head when he gets older.

My 2 cents, none of the bears are over 130-140.  Bear #1 probably doesn't make 125.

As someone else said, its hard to judge with just one picture/angle but the first one looks like the smallest to me. Its belly is far off the ground and looks lean. That said, there is no reason to be picky in WA so I'd shoot the first one I see!

All three same bear my opinion.
Looks a lot smaller right out the den.
Or coming out of winter.
Deer an Elk are the same way ,always look smaller right after winter ,before a good spring green up.

I looked at the pics better.
#2 male
#3 female
Those probably your mama and daddy in your spot.
#1 I don't really know ,my cams do that black and white pics at dawn and dusk.
Looks like there are bear there to hunt.
Go fishing ,where the fish are.
Good luck.
I'm just throwing guess out there,I'm know bear expert.
One way to know for sure,is when both are in the same pic,or some color phase is dominat.

#2 looks decent, but not big - looks like a boar to me, too. The first one is skinny, but probably has put on weight by now, could be the same bear as #3, which I would guess is a sow.

They aren’t big but most bears aren’t. Put half a dozen on the ground and you start to realize how small Black bears really are. With two tags I wouldn’t pass up any of those. Specially on my first tag. A little secret about bears. The 175-250# bears are by far the best eating unless you love chewy meat. The 300+ bears are great for quantity of meat and even better tubs of bear grease. A big marbled full of fat bear steak tastes awesome but… they are tuff as hell. I have yet to get more then a couple pints of bear fat off a bear under 200#. But those little young ones make some fantastic steaks.

When we age bears the 200# ones which seem to be the most common size tend to be around 4-5 yrs old.

If all three were deer, you'd be looking at 2 pointers, not wall hangers. So far this year, I've passed on one about that size, and one that was obviously a yearling.
You'll never get a Big'un if you keep shooting Little'un's.
