My son shot this beast of a blacktail on Friday. He was cruising looking for the ladies.

Breaking a string of giants, but super-proud of my dad for getting it done on this little forky buck.

Dad and I have been learning to hunt together for the last six years or so. We both shot bucks on private land in Idaho a few years back, but haven't had success in WA, or public land.
Went out last Friday AM in some bitter cold (7 degrees at the truck), to glass a hill where I had seen deer moving a lot the preceeding days. However, the movement on this day was nuts! Almost right of the bat we had a buck chasing below us, too quick for a shot, but we thought we knew where he was. We saw this little guy chase across the hillside, same story. Decided to make a move on that buck, and just before I headed out, spotted a real nice mature buck for just a second on the same hill.
The plan was for me to walk around the backside of the hill, and either get a shot on one of those, or chase them back over the hill where Dad might have a shot. I got into the timber where we thought they were bedded, grunted, and one came right to me, but blew before I could even get my gun up. I moved up the hill, when dad radioed that he had a buck in his sights, but no shot. He was going to try to talk me in to where I could see it, but then the buck moved and was in position for dad to shoot. I stayed put, heard one shot, then another.
On the radio, dad wasn't sure what happened. He talked me over to where he had last seen the buck. On the way there, I stumbled upon the scene in the picture. Buck down!
I know he's not the biggest, but dad made a great shot (400+ yards) on his own, and filled a WA tag for the first time at 73 years old. Couldn't be happier for him and for being there with him!

I got one of the leftover multi season tags so was able  to hunt late buck. Been getting this guy on my trail cam for over a month. Was able to call him in, in the evening time within 20 yards of my tree stand using grunt call.

Stand hunted for this buck for a couple of weeks, he was smart, typically came out right after legal shooting light had ended....finally made an early entrance and I was ready.
