Thank you! have been in WA since late 90's hunted elk in "any" areas initially until they changed rules several years back. This prompted me to focus on actually working for elk, cows were easy and i am more a meat hunter than trophy (though i wont pass on a stud for sure). Have focused on bulls in public lands, have not hunted private or pay to play areas (including paper) and have harvested branch bulls in 2012, 14,15,16,17,18 and back on board this season. I feel blessed to actually run into these encounters but i do put boots to ground and walk my butt off. Enough time in the areas and you know where to run and gun from history. I know my average is high compared to most but i really feel that lots of luck is involved, though year after year some may say otherwise...

Only takes a little luck when you know an area, where to go and find elk and are working hard to get it done in and out of season. Congrats and I attribute it to more skill and work than luck.

My Montana bull. Only 16 bulls killed in the entire unit in 2021 and all by residents. Needle in a haystack

Im pretty late on this one but hey it’s still 2022! It was tough out there in the elk woods this year for me, not many encounters or bugles heard, but I found one that wanted to play the game on my 7th or 8th day hunting  Hanging an Idaho resident tag felt pretty good!

Gorgeous! Nice work! Story?

got lucky, first day of my first Elk hunt covered some ground in the morning without seeing any elk but plenty of sign. Then on the late afternoon walk we came up on this guy feeding at about 40-50 yards. First shot made him go stiff and drop, then as i approached he got up and took a few steps before laying down with very labored breathing. He ended up standing back up, taking a few steps so I hit him again. This time he laid back down but kept his head up, we decided to back out as to not push him. After much debate we decided to come back early AM the next morning (didnt want to push him and it was 20F that evening). Well he was only a few yards from where we had left him but unfortunately coyotes had found him that night. Lost a good amount of meat from the hind quarters but I was just happy to notch that first Elk tag. End of the day I had an awesome experience and now have a freezer full of meat.
