What grain bullet?
« on: September 28, 2022, 06:03:07 PM »
I have a .270 rifle that I started reloading for. I am out of 130 gr bullets. I have just under 400 Sierra Spitzer BT 150 gr bullets, part of a reloading estate. Any thoughts out there on rolling over to the 150 grainers? I'm not too familiar with the .270 ballistics in regards to 130gr vs. 150gr.

I run 150s. Love them. Ballistics are just fine. I get around 2800fps with 150s. Little more weight to pack a punch too. Currently I use 150 partitions. But have used sierras in 140s too. Sierra bullets are always super accurate.

150s are awesome. I’m pushing 150gr AccuBonds at 3100fps with RL26. Who needs a 7mag!?

Thanks for the input. Well, since I have the bullets it doesn't sound like it's worth the effort to sell the 150's and buy 130's. I'll just work up a load for the 150's. Dilema resolved. Now I'll put all that money to use on home heating oil or property taxes :bash:

Really not that much difference. 130's would start out a little faster, but slow down faster too. Both weights work just as well for hunting. More important is the type of bullet than the weight. I would say the Sierra's are probably not the best bullet for elk, regardless of the weight. And other than that I'd say the only small difference you'll see between a 130 and a 150 grain is the heavier bullet will have a little more recoil.
