Rattlesnakes
« on: September 28, 2022, 08:03:31 PM »
Want to get my dog out on some birds this weekend. I'm still a novice. Should I be concerned with rattlesnakes this time of year?

Chukar areas I know could definitely have rattlesnakes.

Grouse areas I know won't have them.

Any advise is appreciated.

I was in grouse areas last few days and definitely was warm enough for rattlesnakes!  As to worrying about them, i can’t answer that for ya!  Dogs or kids and snakes are just a part of going outside when theres not snow on the ground for some of us.

A buddy killed a 42" rattler above Northport Saturday grouse hunting. Had 10 rattles.

Lots of snakes this year. They have been out on the roads in the evenings. Rattlesnake vaccines are a good idea.

Saw a Hispanic man with his wife and 8 year old son a couple Sundays back on the Wallula trail. His boy had one of those harbor freight machetes. In really broken english the friendly man told me he had killed 3 "big ones" on past hikes with his trusty machete.

Maybe its where I'm going but Ive seen a lot more rattlesnakes too this year.

They are starting to gather, so where you see one, look for 2, 10, 20. :chuckle:

:yeah: me too! Had way too many close encounters this season, no rattling until last second. This hot weather sucks!

Been out all day here near Selah and not a snake to be seen. Haven't seen one in 30 years of hunting these breaks, and we put on a lot of miles.

I must be doing something wrong because that’s where I’ve been seeing them 😂

I asked an old houndsman one time if his dogs got into snakes very often running bears in September. He said occasionally they’d get bit, usually on the snout, but he never had a dog die from it. He did however say that every dog that he had get but ended up going blind at a young age. Not sure if that’s a hound thing, or due to being bit in the face, or just a weird coincidence.
