Entiat Buck #3... pics and story.
« on: November 16, 2007, 04:42:38 PM »
Monday rolls around and Chuck aka "Shag" shows back up to camp and we begin making plans for getting him a buck aswell...  This guy is a stud and hunted harder than most people and passed up a lot of bucks waiting for the right one.  He changed his expectations throughout the progression of the hunt based on the quality of bucks that we were seeing.  After hunting a couple days together and passing on numerous bucks, we headed out to a "new to me" area to glass up some deer.  Passed up a crab clawed 4 point, and glassed up some more does.  While glassing a big canyon below us, I spotted a deer on the move and quickly realized it was a buck and a decent 4 point.  The buck was moving fast and I barely had time to get him in the spotter before he topped the ridge.  Chuck looked at the buck and right away decided he'd be happy with him.  (chuck also has never killed a muley before)  We drive down farther and Chuck spots the buck still moving through a buck brush thicket.  He passed right by a lone doe and kept moving.  He finally found a doe on a small knob about 900 yards away and settled in around her.  I tell Chuck to head down the ridge and I'll try to signal him if the buck changed positions.  While Chuck worked his way towards the buck, he dissapeared into a brush thicket.  Chuck made a great stock to 360 yards of the buck and waited for him to appear.  After 5 minutes of tense waiting and a fork horn nearly running Chuck over while chasing a doe, the buck makes another appearance and chuck made a good couple of shots to put him down.     The buck is just shy of 20" wide and has great fronts and decent backs.  Lots of character on him.  Chuck has field photo's of the buck and better pics.

We had a solid 45 minute pack out back to the truck and were back in camp by 12:30.  We ate some food, hung out and bs'd for awhile before I had to retreat back home.  These guys are a GREAT bunch of guys I couldn't ask for better people to hunt with.  Thanks again for drawing the tags guy and we'll keep in touch!

Hey guys!  this was my first mulie and I really wanted to hold out for a 170 plus.  Well after hunting hard for 9 days I realized that would be a tough goal to obtain.  With no weather to push the big migraters down and a  weather forcast with warmer temps I deceided I'd go after the next good 4x4 pushing 24" that we could find.

Well I'm real happy with this buck!  He never really gave us a good look at it's width. But liked what I saw!! Hell prolly gross 150!  I'll let you know.

I'll work at getting some more pics up to share.

Micheal J,  well what can I saw.  This guy went outa his way to first help my friends son find a real good 3x3!!  Mike drove up into the Entiat and drove around untill he found them.  Once he found them he introduced himself and explained who he was and that he knew me.   When I arrived back at camp they were hanging out like they had known each  other for years!

I really feel that without mike I prolly wouldn't of tagged out with a buck this caliber.  Mike showed up at camp or met me when he said he'd be there!  He glassed his ass off for hours even when temps were below 30 with 10-15 mph winds. He's a gifted outdoors man and for his age could show even us old guy's a thing or two!

He can spot bucks like no one I've ever met!  He could easily make a living as a guality guide if he wanted to!  I have a new friend and so dose my buddy and his son!!  Mike's a stand up guy and we are greatful we met him.

Over all the hunt in no way a dissapointment eeven without the migration.  My son(14) Lane(12) and I (doa) had a great time hunting and hangin in camp!   I gotta spend time with a good friend who I only getta see once a year!!!!!!We all tagged out and are very lucky to have drawn such a tag!!  Most we met complained that it was one of the worst Entiat seasons they have ever seen.  maybe so but I have new friends had a great time and lost count at over a hundred bucks and even more does!!!  Mike and I watched a whitetail buck mate with a doe!!  Man I wish I could draw 2 years in a row cuz there is a great bunch of buck that will be bigger next year!!

Thanks Mike!  I'll try and post pics by the end of the weekend.

Chuck

His lady friend must have been the gal that got smucked down by the dam this summer.  I know I was surprsed to see a moose there.  I absolutely love the adventure and the pics.  Thanks for sharing Michael and Shag.  I think its very cool that you helped that young man get a nice buck as well.  I think it was a tough year to have a permit.  Just to keep it honest, I doubt the buck is nearly 150 just for folks that might be lookin, his back forks are way to weak..... but who cares  if you like what you see, pull the trigger.   I'm glad you had an awesome hunt.  GOOD STUFF!

Thats a great buck. The only problem I see is you didnt leave much of a cape for the taxidermist. You'll be kickin yourself for that in a few years if you arent allready!

Like I always tell my buddies who claim to be waiting for a bigger one. "Just because you put a mount on the wall, dont mean you cant mount another one".

Great bucks and congrats!  Glad to see a father raising his son to shoot a cannon like my father did.  I've been hoisting a 300 Wthby Mag for 40 years and wouldn't change.  Those are some good pics of your trip.  Congrats again.

Buckshot Bill... I hate to say it, but the way I understood it, Lane saved up all his money, walked into the store with his dad, asked for a south paw style Ruger in a 300 and what do you know?  They had one... lol The kid knew what he wanted from the beginning... besides he's much tougher than his Dad is... haha jk Ron!

Kids got a good head on his shoulders for his age!  Southpaw style in a store is rare too.  Had to order my youngest song his 30-06 years ago cause I couldn't find anything in the store.  My boys like to shoot my 300 but only for a few shots.  After that they get flinchy :chuckle:

Actually guys, The kid (lane has been rebuilding lawn mowers since he was 8.  Saved all the money and bought it himself.    His pop's has been shooting a .270 for prolly 20 yrs.

Bone is right about the score on my buck.  I put the tape on it last night and 143-145 is the score.

I'm gonna do a Skull mount(European)!!!  I'm really into sKull mounts these days.  Hope to smoke a big bull over the next couple weeks with my muzzyloader.  Would really like a Bull skull mount!!!

Mike and I might have found a bigger buck the last two days.  might not have?  But I have no regrets and am very pleased!!  My first mulie!  Really wish I lived closer to mulie country!  I do have some great ideas for regular season next year!!!  I know I can find some hidey holes!   Gotta get back off the roads!!!  Wow!!  The migration had not set in, but I don't care.  It was way to much fun!!
