Wolf Rifle..
« on: February 01, 2023, 05:37:34 PM »
Going to do a custom build, or purchase if it works that way... What's the perfect Wolf rifle? Money or time not being an issue (I wish, but for fun).
Let's hear your thoughts... Thanks!!!

243 wssm in an AR 15 platform

Maybe a 257 Weatherby. I'll be using a 6.5 RPM this weekend
The mountains are calling and I must go

If going with ar platform I’d recommend 6ARC
If bolt gun I personally would go with a 284 or similar 7mm.
Your standard deer rifle would also be just fine

We killed ours with a 6.5 creedmoore but a 7-08 in up would do the job.

I would think a flat fast shooting round to 500-600 yards would be the cats meow.  I'm not an AR fan myself so I would stick with a bolt gun.  I would be looking at a 6.5 creedmoor, 6.5 prc, or 6.5-300wby.  For a bullet choice...I would want something that would hit hard but not destroy the offside.  I am a sucker for the hammer hunters so without doing a ton of research on other bullets, I would go with the 124 grain hammer hunter.  This bullet out of the creedmoor is right at 2850fps.  I would think you could get 3100+fps out of the 6.5 prc and likely 3500fps out the 6.5-300wby.

I'm also not much of a custom rifle guy at this point.  To me the cost doesn't justify the little extra a custom may give a fella.  There are a ton of factory rifles that will shoot .5 moa or better with a good handload and bullet.

I would likely go with the 6.5-300, though it is probably a little overkill.  It would allow you to stretch your range and still maintain the FPS necessary for the hammer hunter to perform.

The Mark V carbonmark elite would fit the bill nicely.

Looks like the 6.5wby RPM would be a good option as well...though I am not familiar with the cartridge.  Looks very similar to the PRC ballistically.

You guys are no fun…. :chuckle:   Joking of course!!   Get creative and come up with a great deer rifle to shoot wolves with.   If I ever go on a wolf hunt, I’m doing it with the 338 lapua.  I want them good and dead and I want to touch them at range if needed.  My taxidermist can sew up the hole. 😂

I want a rifle that doesn't pack up snow in every little crack, AR and most chassis rifles are out

I want it to be very light (gotta walk a lot!)

I don't want it to freeze my hands immediately (I hate that)

I want it to shoot flat, and buck the wind (cross wind canyons)

I don't want giant blown out holes in the fur

I want a light recoil for better follow up shots (got 2 tags?)

Seekins Element in 6.5 PRC is what I use, it would fit your description.

Keep it simple, quality factory rifle, quality factory ammo or reloads.  Common caliber thats mostly available.  Its just a big dog.
