I see odds for zero points, is the first year you apply zero or can you buy a point right away for the draw?

The first year is zero.  You are awarded a point if you do not draw.

The spring bear odds used to be much better, but during the pandemic the total number of people applying for spring bear increased dramatically.  There were some units like SW Oregon that you could draw every year as second choice and build points that way, but those days are gone.  There are units you can still draw with zero points, and turkey season is the exact same season dates.  So I always get a turkey tag too. Some of the better bear units have good turkey hunting at lower elevations.

Some big bears in Oregon.  My best friend's brother shot this big bear on his property last year in the SW Oregon unit.  Recorded as 6th largest bear in Oregon history.  7'8" nose to tail.  My other buddy was the butcher, and while they didn't get a total weight he estimated it was probably around 550lbs live weight.   The bear jerky and sausage was amazing.

Applied today. Only chance to draw is from the 25% pool for me since I drew last year.

Hoping for a tag this year. I've never really hunted for bear before. Figured I'll be hanging out in the Coast Range cutting trails this Spring, so might as well give it a go.

Application numbers are now posted in our accounts.  Which means the seed number has been drawn.  But so for none of us have been able to get our hands on the seed number.  ODFW usually does the draw on their youtube channel for the June big game drawing, but not spring bear.   Last year the spring bear seed number was posted on the ODFW page on Feb 15, but they didn't post it today.   So will either have to call for the seed number or just be patient and wait 5 more days.  LOL.

Seed number is posted:  0267062

Yuck.  I'm 9.6M above it....not likely getting my first choice.  Oh well.  Might draw the second.  And there is always turkey season.

What is a seed number, and how do I know where to look??

Log into your account.  Next to spring bear will be your seven digit application number.

Oregon does a bingo ball random draw to generate the random 7 digit "seed" number as the starting point from where the draw begins.  The controlled hunt draw indexes above that 0267062 seed number.  So the closer above the seed number your application number is, the higher your odds of drawing, but it depends on how many applications there are vs. tags for the unit you applied to.  There are two pools: 1) 75% of tags go to those holding the most preference points, and 2) the remaining 25% of tags go to random draw regardless of points held.   The same seed number is used for both pools.

So for example if your application number was 0267063 you would have a 100% chance of drawing (if the unit has non-resident tags available) in the 25% pool regardless of how many preference points you have.

There is math involved in predicting whether you may draw based on a normal distribution of the number of applications spread out above the seed number.  Or just wait til Feb 20 and get the results.  LOL.  The seed numbers are more fun in May/June as there is a 6 week period of waiting for results, and you can get an early sneak peek with the seed numbers by doing some math.
