Put a chunk of alder or cherry on the barbeque ahead of time.  Once it starts smoking, move it off to the side just a little, then put the fish on the grill.  Adds a subtle smoke flavor without overpowering it.  I do this every time I barbeque fish.  Best of both worlds.

I breakout the old Weber Charcoal Kettle Grill and use Apple Wood chunks. Alder chunks also works well. I never bought into the cedar planks though. Tried them a few times, and basically think they add little to nothing. Seems more gimmick then function  :dunno:

I cut my own planks. If they are thick enough and you soak them you can cook at a temp hot enough to get alot of smoke but not overcook the fish . Ads alot of flavor in a short time . Even more flavor if you can find a piece of old growth to make planks out of . I really like it ,  :twocents:

Ya, if that plank isn't getting some char it's not adding much.

Fished the Yakima this morning around TC. No hits but saw a decent number of kings jump out of the water.

Picked up this 18 pounder below Willow Grove. Still had sea lice. A couple nasty gashes too. Only lost a very small amount of meat from them. Fished from 11 to 4. Only takedown. Saw 3 others caught for half dozen boats.
Wind was terrible. Ran my kicker most of the time. Takes a lot of the fun out of it. Chartreuse with orange stripes maglip 4.0. 3 foot dropper 4 foot leader.
I think I will try to hit it a daylight Wednesday morning.

Mighty fine eat'n right there! Headed back to Cathlamet tomorrow and hit it thru the weekend. Brother and I fished 3 days down there last week and limited 2nd and 3rd day after we figured where the fish were. Baked some and canned one. Used Kwik fish wrapped with tuna belly. Hopefully there'll still be some down there.

1 for 2 this morning. Brother in law lost a big one earlier. Dang thing swam past the front of the boat faster than any fish Ive ever seen. Got it down past the kicker and sea anchors and started to bring it in. I saw the slider and then the fish popped off. It was a big one. At least comparable to the one he caught! Then he picked up this beautiful 18 pounder!
Was planning on taking the wife back out Friday for another shot at a big one. So Much for that!
Fish checker said 4 fish for 42 boats, counting ours. That was about noon. The boat behind us had 1 small 1. Checker said most fish were caught in 5-7 feet of water!

That might explain why they are going horizontal so fast.
Congrats.

Shut down until the 16th. No salmon or steelhead.  Sounds like tribes went way over ESA impacts.
