300 blackout for hunting...who does it?
« on: March 18, 2023, 09:23:26 AM »
Anyone hunt with the 300 blackout??  If so what bullet or ammo are you using?  Was thinking of loading up 100 grain Hammer Hunters which should make a mean deer round to 150-200 rounds.  Also saw that Sierra make a 300 blackout hunting round with the 125 grain bullet which would also work well.

Thoughts and Experiences from folks that have used this caliber for hunting???

Also for folks who are hunting would you mind sharing your setup if its an AR platform? specifically load/buffer combination suppressed or not.  There are  a ton of factory ammunition options that look great for hunting deer sized game inside 100yds. Real world experiences appreciated!

I took down a chunky buck at 50 yards with 300 blackout. Hornaday 190gr Subsonic with suppressor on a cheap AR. The buffer is whatever cheapo one comes with PSA lowers, and we slapped a hunting suppressor on it. Not to be too graphic, but I guess this is a hunting forum, but the round entered into his lungs and turned the entire body cavity to purple mush. The deer fell instantly on the spot. The round stayed in tact and expanded nicely, I dont remember where I recovered it. I ate all the meat around the area and found no fragments. When we gutted him most of the guts just fell out in liquid. I got a lot of grief for using 300 blackout, mostly due to "range and FPS blah blah" but I hunt on the west side and 200+ yard shots are pretty rare. I'm now a fan of 300 blackout and I imagine for self defense it's probably as good as they say.

I would just make sure your using a bullet that will expand at 2400 fps or less.

I did shoot one deer with it.
Lost it,mainly due to the chunk of stateland being very small . And my fault mainly for jumping it,do to it being right before sunset.

Long story short.
Shot buck right before dark, probably 20 minutes of shooting light left. About 80 yards maybe.
Buck took a few steps, droped right there.
I was like yup ,got him. Decent 4 pts buck too.
Walked up to about 10 yards ,dang thing jumped up and took off.
Found some blood, with my cell phone light.
Backed out ,came back at first light ,picked up the trail.
It took off onto private property.
Was not able to recover.
My shot placement could of not been ideal/but it felt good.
I was using factory Barnes 110 grain.

Definitely a good deer caliber for 100 yards or less.
Really good for tree stand, deer blind type work.
Don't make my mistake and be ready to take another shot if need be.

Most likely it was me,making bad decisions.
Anyway I changed caliber and didn't use it anymore.
I haven't hunted deer on that stateland anymore.
Cause you basically have to head shoot them or recovery is not gonna happen. Or get lucky and drt them.

Dang sorry to hear this story, was it still spazzing out or was it totally asleep when you spooked it?

My buddy who taught me to hunt always tries to ding them in the neck right behind the skull if possible if they're still dancing around at all, we hunt pretty small parcels too so I know the pain.

I don't think it was moving.
Laying there playing dead.
I have shot deer twice since then.
And approach all wounded game animals now, alot different now.
It was a learning experience for me.
The way it droped , fooled me into thinking it was done.
Now when I approach if I see it move or even blink an eye.
It gets round two.
Saves me tracking, ends the whole deal quickly.
I rather piss in the wind, then have piss down my back.

Have never shot a Deer but my son and I have shot plenty of Pigs. I have only head shot them with 110 Gr GMX going about 2300 FPS. He has used the same bullet with double lung shots and they work really well. Neither of us have shot past 75 yards though

I have a can on order and already have 2 bullets hand loaded for subsonic. The 190 gr Hornady SubX and the 200 gr Maker T-REX
The mountains are calling and I must go

My son shot his first buck with my bolt gun 300blk. 125 grain Nosler ballistic tips about 75 yards. Low lung shot he went about 25 yards and was down.

I have shot 2 deer with an ar platform suppressed using 220 grain remington loads. Both dropped at 50 yrds. on the subs i wouldn’t push it more than 75 yrds for the sake of muzzle energy. For longer shots i would use the barnes 110 grain

10.5” SBR, 5” form 1 can built for subsonic loads, 190gr Hornady sub-x, red dot sight. Last deer went 20 yards and piled up, 60 yard shot. The whole set up fits inside a backpack and sounds like a nail gun. Great for my autistic son (noise sensitivity) for his hunting rifle. I won’t use it on anything bigger than a deer and with subsonic ammo I’d prefer to keep it under 75 yards. Great blacktail brush gun.

Been wondering about this just picked one up and bought some Winchester 150 grain Deer Season, and some 220 grain subsonic. Glad to hear the suppressed subs are fairly quiet. Thinking of using it for Blacktail this year.

is anyone running an extractor o ring or upgraded extractor spring? I bought a BCG from bravo company and it came with a "Crane o-ring" and directions to install the o-ring for all 300 blackout uppers.
