2022 Hanford pics?
« on: March 28, 2023, 10:46:45 AM »
Has anyone seen any recent pics of the Hanford bulls? Are there any big ones left out there?

This morning I saw 14 bulls in one location.  Not giant at all...right now.   :chuckle:
And somewhere around 150 cows in 4 different groups.

There were plenty of rather large bulls seen in the fall and winter.

Worked out there for 32 years. There are tons of elk out there. As many as there has ever been. The real big boys spend most of their time now down by the river and only leave it to rut.

This is from an FB page, pretty sure it's Hanford. Screenshot of a grainy pic to begin with.

That's the pic I was looking for. I saw it on someone's phone the other day. He was told it was from last year and wanted to know if anyone has seen that bull up close. It looks enormous!

I don't have pics but I saw a huge non-typical last summer. All the bulls out there are living to maturity so the average bull you see is a Washington stud. Their only predator is automobiles  :chuckle:

Steve's Outdoor Adventures on the Sportsman Channel has an episode called "Nuclear Elk" where he is hunting adjacent to Hanford on a private ranch. I couldn't find a link to the episode but worth a watch if you can find it. No freakish giants in it but he does take a nice bull here in Wa.

I worked at Hanford for 32 years in Radiation Protection. We surveyed the elk and there are some big ones out there. But the elk on the neighboring ranches are not near as big as the ones that live down along the river between the 100 and 200 areas of Hanford.  Another big issue with the bulls on and off the reservation is the extreme high bull to cow ratio. This makes just about all of them broken up pretty bad if you are hunting anytime after or during the rut.  When I say broken, I mean majorly broken.  I have seen the 400 plus bulls on the site but they don't leave. The old Hanford and Whitebluffs town sites are on the river with all the feed, shelter, and cover they will ever need and no one can touch them. I think it was just a couple of months ago a Hanford worker was caught with just a shed antler and got in huge trouble and Im not sure but probably fired.

A lot. Was down there on a fire a few years ago and talking to one of the ranch managers his particular ranch had 10 tags a year that they sold for 10k a piece. And he said he was on the low end for tag numbers
