Pheasant on the coast?
« on: March 19, 2023, 09:05:03 AM »
I went out to Westport yesterday to get some razor clams, and saw a rooster pheasant next to the road going in to Westhaven State Park plain as day. It seemed so out of place, like seeing a pronghorn in the Olympics somewhere. I dunno, maybe you all will say "yeah they're everywhere over there" and I'll re-calibrate my knowledge, but it blew my mind!

Few and far between anywhere on this side short of an actual release site.  Those don't last long either.  My guess is someone let it go or it escaped.
May that for which I prepare never come to pass.

The dunes supported many pheasant for years. I believe the building of homes has brought a large population of cats that destroy everything.

There is a population of them in Joyce, WA. I have seen at least 10 over the years.

Used to be a bunch of pheasant (and quail) in the area between Port Angeles and Sequim.  Many of the pheasant escaped the release site and doing okay year over year, but like you mention all the new homes and cats have cleaned out most of the small animals.

We have seen quite a few of them over the years in the dunes as mentioned around Ocean Shores. Wife and I saw two of them last summer in the Long Beach area.

We used to raise a few Exotic Pheasants, along with the 25 Ringneck eggs that the State supplied Hunters... fertile eggs to be incubated and raised for later release into the wild.
Invariably some Lucky Western Washington Hunter would do a doubletake just before setting their sights on our rare Golden, Silver or Lady Amherst Pheasant that had escaped their cage.
(What a thrill that must have been.)
