Grouse hunting in snohomish County
« on: July 13, 2023, 10:29:18 PM »
Avid duck hunter here looking for some advice  on where or what I should be looking  for when grouse hunting. I live in the Lynnwood area.

I've found that the best way to learn something new is to have seasoned veteran explain a few things and tell  you the ropes. I'm 36 and have a young toddler and don't have a lot  of time to scout.

Thanks for the advice any is much appreciated

Good grouse hunting is typically found in mixed hardwood and maybe some conifers. Look for 'em around alder, vine maple, hemlock.  You can often find them in the higher elevations (blue grouse) near huckleberry fields, and there ought to be water nearby. I've found blue grouse just ba-dooping down old logging roads morning and evening, picking up pea gravel. Ruffed grouse will also show up along old logging or USFS roads mornings and evenings. Often times, after a seasonal rain, they'll be out along open areas drying off. Blues also like the curves of logging roads in higher elevations.
You might have some luck up along the Money Creek drainage or head further east and try your luck up along the Foss River drainage.

So my next question is. How do I know where it's legal to hunt?

Being an avid duck hunter, you can do it pretty much the same way you tell whether a piece of land is legal to hunt ducks on.
What country can preserve it's liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon & pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants.

Hunt the national forests and state land. Can't go wrong.

OnX is great, I’ve had it for a few years, but even though it tells property owners and boundaries, that doesn’t mean any public area is legal to hunt.  I’ve been trying to figure out Tiger Mountain area and still am not 100% sure it’s legal there based on everything I’ve researched, including the Washington State game regs.

OnX plus google for specific state/fed land areas is what I use.

Tiger mountain in particular is in King County's firearm restriction area from my understanding. So muzzy and archery only.

Firearm restriction areas generally only bar the use of rifles. Shotguns and pistols should be OK.

Sorry, it's a "No Shooting Area" map. I've actually never seen the law behind it until looking for it just now. Seems to include any type of firearm.

12.68.020  Violations - Misdemeanor - Penalty - Arrest.

          A.  Any person carrying a firearm in a "No Shooting Area," under circumstances which manifest intent to discharge or which indicates that such firearm has been discharged in a "No Shooting Area," is guilty of a misdemeanor.  Among those circumstances which may be considered in determining such intent are the following:

            1.  Type of firearm;

            2.  Manner in which firearm is being carried;

            3.  Whether or not the firearm is capable of discharge;

            4  Information concerning the discharge of a firearm within the prior two hours.

          B.  The first offense for violation of this chapter constitutes a civil penalty not to exceed one hundred dollars.  Consecutive offenses are punishable, upon conviction, by a fine not exceeding two hundred fifty dollars or by confinement in the county jail for a period of not more than ninety days.

          C.  Any police officer having information to support a reasonable belief that a person has committed a violation of this chapter, involving physical harm or threats of harm to any person or property and by a firearm, has the authority to arrest the person.  (Ord. 1498 §§ 1 - 3, 1973).

12.68.810  Tiger Mountain Area.  The shooting of firearms is prohibited and a no‑shooting area is established with Gilman, Tiger Mountain, Mirrormont, Haas, Hutchinson, and Preston precincts in and around the vicinity of the Tiger Mountain Area, lying within unincorporated King County and comprising the following legally described area:

          Those portions of Townships 23 and 24, Range 6 East, W.M. TOGETHER with those portions of Townships 23 and 24, Range 7 East, W.M., King County, Washington described as follows:

          Beginning at the intersection of the South region of SR 90 and West margin of SR 18, said point being located in Township 23, Range 7 East; thence generally Southwesterly along said West margin of SR 18 to its intersection with the Northeasterly margin of the Issaquah‑Hobart Road, said point being located in Sec. 36, Township 23, Range 6 East; thence generally Northerly along said margin of Issaquah Hobart Road to its intersection with the City Limits of Issaquah as established by city ordinance 855; thence Easterly, Northerly, Easterly, Northerly and Northwesterly along said city limits to the East line of that area annexed to the City of Issaquah by city ordinance 725; thence North and West along said city limits to the West margin of Northern Pacific Railroad (abandoned); thence Northerly along said margin to its intersection with the South margin of SR 90; thence Easterly along said South margin to the West margin of SR 18 and point of beginning.  Except as follows:

          A.  All portions already provided for by King County Resolution 28537 and exceptions thereto;

          B.  All portions thereof lying within Tiger Mountain State Forest.  (Ord. 6998, 1984).

This is the problem.  You nearly need to hire a surveyor to mark out the boundaries so you don’t end up getting some sort of violation  :dunno:

We used to find lots up off the 7000 mainline (lake rosinger to spada)
Haven’t been there in years, not ever sure the road isopen anymore
But they were thick in there
One shot. One kill!

Well there's a map that shows the boundaries, this is just the text half of what should be outlined on the map.
