In-line Education
« on: September 13, 2023, 10:44:11 AM »
Specific question for Knight Bighorn without 209 ignition. Moisture is the enemy for these things to go bang, I understand this. With the barrel taped the only way for water to enter is thru/around the cap on the nipple, correct?

Does anyone have a hack for preventing or minimizing this? Pretty new to muzzy hunting. Third year coming up.

One of the things do is to change the nipple to a #11 nipple that will seal the cap from moisture entering between the cap and the nipple post.

I use a Spit Fire nipple, and when applying the cap I use a Traditions #11 capper to push the cap down TIGHT on the nipple.  The down side is you will not be able to get the cap off with your fingers.  You will have to shoot it off or peel it of with the edge of a knife blade.

I also use Tetra gun grease on the treads of the nipple

I use muzzle mitts in the barrel

And my last suggestion if the above stuff doesn't work.  Wrap the breech with a plastic type wrap

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

I stole a bottle of my wife's clear nail polish.
After putting the cap on tight, I paint it on.

I found nail polish works the best. Point the muzzle up add a drop of polish and it will flow around and seal the cap. As noted, you will need to peal it off or shoot it off. With 209's I would look for primers that are sealed at the flash hole like Cheddite's.

We used the plastic wrap and tape on both my daughters knight muzzys for their mule deer hunt it’s kinda overkill but when it comes to our kids hunt it’s not👍
All the other suggestions I heard work well also and keep your gun outside or in your vehicle at night because bringing it into a warm room will cause condensation in the barrel
I'm your dam tour guide Arnie please don’t wonder off the dam tour.

Are there any dam questions ..

Some good advice. Too close to season to swap out gun parts so I’ll take up a couple of these suggestions. Thanks guys!

Ive used my Knights for 30 years. Wolverines first, then Bighorns. Ive used them in every kind of weather imaginable. Torrential downpours for days to 85 plus degree days and cold nights. I have never had a misfire because of condensation in the barrel or getting my primer wet. I strictly use RWS #11 caps. They are the best made. During the heavy rains I bring them in to dry everything out. The rest of the time I leave them in the truck at night. During heavy rains I shelter the breech area under my arm whenever possible. But dont go out of my way to take extra precautions. All of the above suggestions help. But I am very confident that every time I pull the trigger on my Knight muzzy, it will fire. Ive had 1 misfire since ive owned and shot muzzys. That was due to a bad nipple. My son has as much time as I do with Knights and has never had a misfire.

Push the RWS #11 cap on tight and dont point your barrel in the air during a heavy rainstorm. You will be fine!
