check those muzzy loads don't assume they are dry

I haven't hunted many dry days with my Knight BH, but I've managed to always keep the powder dry.  It's never failed to go boom even months later.   I use an ample amount of the blue Knight breach plug grease(don't go stingy) and always wrap the end of the barrel with electrical tape.

I hunted the coast and dealt with all the rain , I hand carry my muzzy ( knight ultra light with a bare 209 conversion) and tape over the barrel and I’ve had zero issues in the rain . I also hunt the late muzzy season for blacktail in the snow and still zero issues

Westside88- I see Western WA as your location so I'm guessing you hunted through those 2 days just buckets on and off???  This was my first year muzzy hunting and I was worried about mine as well.  Thankfully mine went boom on the last day.  Knight UL with full plastic jacket primer system and electrical tape over the barrel.  Carried it muzzle up just slung over my shoulder most those days.  Sometimes when it was really pouring I move it to hand carry with a hand over the breach hoping it would help.

Were you using the FPJ deal on yours?  Just curious as I'm trying to learn as much as I can about what happened hoping I don't do it as well.  I've used Eberlstock packs in the past as well so I'm familiar with the setup.  I'm wondering if water ran down that sleeve on the pack and just sat on the back of the breech plug seeping it's way in?

I run loose triple 7 and a #11 cap. It was dry under the nipple and the cap itself went off when I tried it later. I put a new one on every time I take them off and save the old for practice. I think you’re probably correct that the pack was likely so wet that it was dripping water into a vulnerable place. In the future I’ll cover the barrel and breach and will probably be fine. I was in the foothills of the Olympics and those couple days were WET!

Used a solo hunter rifle cover over my muzzleloader this season and got dumped on pretty hard for a few days. I still taped the muzzle and as always thread taped the breach plug. Rifle always looked pretty darn dry at the end of the day though I haven't pulled the breach plug yet to see what the powder actually looks like.

I have hunted in some very wet Oly Peninsula late season weather with my muzz and have never had that issue. I use electrical tape on my muzzle, and I Still use #11 percussion caps on my bighorn and my Disc Extreme.  If you are using 29 primers depending on how those sit in your muzz there is more than enough room to get water in and around them.  Thanks to Sabotloader, I have a hunting lifetime supply of little silicone cap covers that I use when it is wet out.

I haven’t had this happen in my life yet. Gun always goes bang but I always electrical tape all my barrels and if it’s raining I tie a latex glove around the breach and only use #11 caps for that tight seal. i don’t shoot it at the end of the day but usually before the next season after sitting loaded in the safe all year.

Exactly what I do. 3M Scotch 33 electrical tape in a cross pattern on the muzzle and with one final wrap around the end to seal the cross. Always lots of plug lube on the breech plug. Using a modern 209 primer and Knight FPJ red plastic primer holder. Always goes boom. Currently planning on hunting the rain storm coming in on Friday with this method.

Dont know why you worry about the barrel ? If water gets by the sabot then something is wrong......Thats a tight seal thik about it 

It's actually not a tight seal until the pressure of the powder burning pushes it forward and flairs the sabot into the rifling.

I hunted probably 5-6 days in heavy rain this year with my muzzy. Taped barrel, #11 caps and a latex glove covering the breach while hunting. I was out Wednesday in a down pour hunted daylight to just before dark. I’ll admit I was starting to wonder if my gun had survived all the weather it had seen and was planning to shoot it at the end of the day. Well the end of the day ended up being on a small heard of elk with a cow tag in pocket and as expected the gun went boom when it needed to. As Always my trusty knight bighorn and #11 cap set up with loose pyrodex powder didn’t let me down.
