Anybody running the slik sling on your pack?
« on: February 29, 2024, 12:52:46 PM »
Looking for a sling that I can still access my rifle quickly while keeping me hands free for trekking poles and climbing.  The Slik Sling looks intriguing.  What's your real world experience with it?

No experience with the one you mentioned. But I use the Kifaru gun bearer, on my Exo Mtn pack, for the reasons you stated. Have used it for probably 5 years now and really like it. It carries the gun out in front of you VS the one you mentioned. Check it out

My grandson and I have about 7 years in Gunrunner Packs.

No experience with the one you asked about, but it looks like a lot of messing around with straps and adjustments.

Haven't read about or seen anyone using that product. But it looks similar to the SG sling. I've used it for a few years now and like it on my SG 5900 bag/xcurve frame. Only gets in the way of my legs when crawling over deadfall. And you can adjust the height to get it higher than in my pic. It's riding prettyyyy low there...lots of deadfall on that trip.

With either one, be wary of the quick release latch releasing on accident sending your rifle to the dirt. Happened to me once and now I just clip my rifle in with the top side buckle on the pack. I have enough dexterity to reach back and unclip it

Kuiu used to make one very similar to the Kifaru one posted.  Having the rifle under your arm and in front of you is the only way to go.  Super comfortable, allows you to use both hands and most importantly....protects your rifle and optics.  I use this sling when without walking sticks and it is awesome.  Also super quick to access your rifle if you come across an unexpected animal.

Kifaru gun bearer here. Took me a little getting used to and a little convincing but it works like a champ.

Ok, to you guys running the Kifaru gun bearer are you running it on Kifaru packs or other?  I run a Mystery Ranch Metcalf and have no plans of changing packs.  If I go the gun bearer route I want to make sure the universal works just as well.

Yeah I run mine on the Exo mountain. The universal strap wraps around the entire hip belt.

On my new exo K4 I was actually able to thread it thro the new molle they have on the hip belt.

That being said, I never had a problem with it before wrapping around the entire hip belt.

My son uses the gun bearer on his Metcalf.  He originally used the universal model that wraps around the belt with no problems.  There is an aftermarket sleeve made that slips over the belt with molle webbing that he uses now which works even better. I believe the aftermarket sleeve was made by a member on Rokslide (Pods8).
The gun bearer does take some getting used to, but once you dial it in and get it adjusted to your liking you'll never go back

Gun bearer has two models, one is specifically for kifaru packs and the other is universal. I have the Kuiu pack, if I’m just hiking in or out I use the Kuiu rifle holster, the gun is out of my way but somewhat inaccessible. If I’m hunting I use the gun bearer. I really like how protected my scope is in the gun bearer, just as fast as a sling without the damn thing sliding off your shoulder. Another bonus is your muzzle is lower than your head so it doesn’t get snagged on limbs and what not.If the gun bearer is adjusted correctly, you can use your barrel to stabilize your binoculars for quick glassing. Great piece of gear, takes a little getting used to.

I have a sling, and absolutely never use it.  I got the Kifaru gun bearer a few years ago, and exclusively use that now.

I think this is the answer to your question.
