Interesting replies. There seems to be a few folks who like less-than-mainstream calibers. I haven’t seen the PRC’s come up once, though. Is it just the price of ammo?

I own quite a few , but my faves are 300wsm and 6.5PRC - the 6.5PRC is a very impressive shooter

If I was told tomorrow I could only have one hunting rifle the rest of my life, I would keep my Stainless Browning .338 win mag. Several others that would fit that role - 300 win mag,300 weatherby,7mm rem mag. I’m partial to having more gun than I need but, in my opinion .270 win should be the floor and go up from there. I’ll happily acknowledge there are great choices in the 6mm world, just not my ideal do everything rounds

Although for my friends up coming moose hunt in possible griz country, I am packing a fully loaded KSG with slugs in one tube and Buck shot in the other.

People get really passionate about this one. There really isn’t a greatest all around caliber because most of them have a lot of overlap. I’m of the opinion that one should decide on the rifle they want to carry first, then decide on a chambering. 6.5 creedmoor, .270, 30-06, .308, .300 mag, most of them all do the same thing.

I own a bunch of hunting rifles in various chamberings, but for an all purpose caliber, my own preference is the 30-06, it might be a little more than you need sometimes but it’s never inadequate. Ammo can be found nearly anywhere in a pinch(and usually affordable). Shoots “flat enough” for any hunting I’ll usually find myself doing, but won’t shatter your eardrums like a big magnum will.

Disclaimer: I don’t have fantasies of taking 700 yard shots on animals, don’t dial turrets on my hunting rifles, don’t own any flat brimmed hats and still wear a red and black wool shirt in the woods, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

I used .270 for everything for 35 years. Deer, elk, and bears were killed without issue. I also have 7mm08 that I’ve killed a couple deer and a few coyotes with, it’s a little lighter so as I get older it will get carried more.

Taking into account Alaska and the lower 48 I’d say a .300 of some sort, mag, WSM, Ultra, really wouldn’t matter. Taking out AK I’d go with a .270, just AK when I didn’t leave it much a .338.
