Turnbull cow elk tag
« on: June 12, 2024, 05:20:13 PM »
I drew Turnbull cow elk tag and was curious who has drawn this tag before and what I should expect as far as hunting on the refuge.

My 14 year old son drew the Turnbull Youth Spike/Antlerless tag.  We are in the same boat, never been out to the refuge before.  I'm hopeful we'll be able to make some use out of the tag as his time is extremely limited in the fall/winter with travel hockey.

I drew the same tag several years ago it is pretty much a flat ground hunt. The normal cow season was only about six or seven days. I'm not sure how long the youth hunt is but if it's only six or seven days I think you should see which is more important a hockey game or an elk hunt. It was definitely one of the easier hunts that I had been on. From the parking area just followed the roads back into the area you're allowed to hunt sometimes it takes two or three days but all of a sudden you're on the Elk and the rest is history. They will give you a map of the area you can hunt. Good luck to both of you.

 :yeah:

Its really an hour or 2 hunt each day of the season. The ell are either there or they arent. If they aren’t, the best plan is to leave and try again the next day.

Bullblaster is correct, the areas are easy to cover in a couple of hours or so. The elk move on and off refuge…depending on what your season dates are, hunting pressure outside the refuge may help you out. Also, you already may know this but if the bullets you use have any lead in them, they require you to haul the guts out of the refuge. Good Luck!

Thanks for the info about the lead bullets.
