Any place to hunt squirrels???
« on: January 23, 2025, 08:35:49 PM »
Im from Louisiana originally and we have tons of squirrels and a very open season for them.

Here, I dont know other than you cant shoot Western Greys or another species I cant remember but Fox Squirrels and Eastern Greys (Including the black melanated ones) are fair game.

I live in Lynden.  Any place around here I can take my .22 and teach my son the basics of hunting by popping some squirrels (they make a darn good gumbo too.)?

Danielaw, Most of the Easterns are in residential areas, so it's tough to find huntable populations.

You may find some info with a search on here. This comes up once in a while, but like was written, the huntable ones are where people live and are feeding them.
I went to Green River Community College on the West side and the numbers (while I was there) were INSANE.
I often pondered if a person could get away with a quiet pellet gun without someone freaking out, but there are a lot of people hiking through the campus that I am sure would have heartburn over it.
I am sure it would be like the time I went bow fishing at Green Lake. THAT got some people excited!

The best place I have found to hunt squirrels is in my back yard off of the bird feeder.

I’ve been interested in hunting squirrels, but was under the impression that it wasn’t quite legal.  Is that just county or species specific?  The source who informed me may not have been reputable.

Some squirrels are protected. The ones that are not protected tend to live in populated areas. Also, some cities have bans on any type of shooting critters in the city limits.
You really need to find out what is legal to do where you want to hunt them.

My city has, the last time I checked, a ban on shooting any firearm/air gun/airsoft/slingshot within city limits. A real bummer.

Remember not to eat any squirrels you shot in urban areas.  I read a study a year ago where urban squirrels were tested and found to be full of toxins associated with rodent poisons. I won't let my hawk eat one she catches let alone put on on the table for us. You left a squirrel hunters haven in Louisiana. There's nothing like that for swamp rabbits or squirrels around here.
You'll never get a Big'un if you keep shooting Little'un's.
