figuring out your dope
« on: September 07, 2024, 06:41:15 PM »
So new rifle is all put together and working on load development. Scope is MOA and I need to figure out how to dial for dope.  Old rifle has custom dial with yardage.  New scope is a Nightforce and want to keep the original dial.  I think my best option is a rangefinder that will give me both yardage and MOA to dial my dope in.  What do you recommend.  I am not looking at mounting a card with yardage on the stock.  What do you recommend rangerfinder wise?

Lots of guys use and love the Sig Kilo rangefinders.  You need to make sure the model selected comes with a ballistics calculator.  You enter the data in your phone and connect your phone with the program.  Then you just have to select the right program in your rangefinder for that rifle / load.

Or....you can get a ballistics calculator on your phone and just use that in conjunction with a rangefinder.

Or....you can make a card in 50 yard increments and tape it to your rifle.

I do both of the latter and it works pretty well.

The apps I use on my phone are...1.  "shooter" app and 2.  "GeoBallistics"  I have used many others and these are the two I really like.

Some good ideas.  Looks like Leupold or maybe Sig rangefinders might be something I pick up soon.  That chart or ballistic app that Taco is using might get me by with my current rangefinder.  I get a good discount through Leupold but not in stock for their rangefinders with ballistic calculators.

You can probably find a used G7 for a good price.

I will check those out.  Not sure they will fit in a rangerfinder pouch.  any others you recommend?

Revic BR4, I'd avoid the ones where you just pick a pre installed load that's close, the Revic or older G7 models you enter all of your info into them. I have the 2nd gen G7 BR2500 it provides a ballistic calculation to 1400 yards the new Revic will provide a ballistic calculation to almost 2000 yards, they range farther but the ballistic capabilities are less.

I have the new revic and it’s nice. I like their app for tuning data and then sync to the rangefinder via Bluetooth. I had the original G7 and sold it for the Swaro el range TA and hate the Swaro solution. I can’t get it to even come close to being correct at distance.

I have the G7 and the Geovid 3200.com binos that have an app that is customizable and downloads to the binos through Bluetooth. I definitely like calculating the loads on the app instead of using a couple buttons and the menu on the rangefinders.

There are definitely more economical range finding binos on the market today so it is worth shopping around to find the ones you like. A big deciding factor for me has always been high quality glass with simple and fast adjustment calculations. Also ensuring the calculations are made out to what I am comfortable shooting to.
