Going to be a fun hunt
« on: September 12, 2024, 07:49:45 AM »
Leaving today for an Archery Elk Hunt for 8 days here in Idaho

Meeting 2 Washington buddies. They will pack in with me tomorrow and leave Friday
Cliff has killed Elk with a rifle but never a bow
Tony has killed Cows with a bow but never a Bull

My business partner James has never killed an Elk. He is coming up on Wednesday and leaving Saturday or Sunday with me

My goal is to get all 3 of these guys Bulls and with some luck I might get a shot along the way. Im fine with just packing Elk all week

Hopefully Ill have some success pics when I get back
The mountains are calling and I must go

Give em hell zwickey! Should be a pleasant week to be hunting.

Got home last night after 9 days and 7 days of hunting. Only blood on my bow was from a Grouse :(

I passed on 2 bulls the only day I hunted for my self, a little 5 pt and a 1x2

In Bulls just about every day and they all had multiple opportunities, just wouldn't come together for multiple reasons. Bulls at 10, 15, 30, 35, 40 and more

I will share 1 story from the last hour of the hunt because its funny, it sucks and have never heard of it happening to anyone before

James and I had a nice 6 pt that I just couldn't get him away from his cows no matter what I tried but he bugled a lot so I had James sneak in while I called from about 300 yards out. He and his 10 Cows had filtered out into a draw with a little spring and some Quakies, so he worked his way in. He gets to about 60 as he hunkers down behind a 4' tall Quakie and lets out a challenge bugle. The Bull runs over straight at him to 10 yards , he draws his bow and kind of stands up. His arrow gets caught in the bush and pulls it out of the full capture rest. The bulls reacts and turns and walks to 20 broadside, the arrow is laying on his wrist and he is trying to get the rest down but it wont at full full draw so he tries to get it back in the rest with his finger and cant. The bull just walked back to his cows and left. He was pretty upset with him self but *censored* happens

Sorry about the freezer. I bet that encounter will have him telling the story for a long time to come. Good memories are as important as bloody tags, sometimes.

Man that is a tough way to end the hunt. Hopefully your buddy isn’t having nightmares about it. Sounds like you had lots of encounters which always makes things fun. I need to get my ass out to Idaho.

It was pretty rough for him but he is young, He will get his share. I have messed up just about every way possible in my life time of hunting Elk but never that way  :chuckle:
