Probably will wind up being your most memorable bird dog.

Great choice.

Maggie is a beautiful color!  I am a Chesapeake lover.  Mine is about the same age, she will be two in November. I have had a few labs over my years and they're good dogs but the loyalty you get from a Chesapeake is hard to beat.  I have trained all of my duck dogs from start to finish.  They can be a frustrating breed but they are hands down some of the best waterdogs out there.  My best hunter I ever had was back in the 90s it was my first Chesapeake and she was an east of a dog. No fear and relentless in finding a bird. My new pup is much more calm and timid and cautious. You never know what the personality will be until you get there. She is birdy and loves when we work live birds like pigeon.  My best advice for keeping her up to speed on a working relationship is to work her a minimum 15 min a day. I like to switch it up from just walking at heal like we are jumping ducks to 5 to 6 blind retrieves.  I have found the more I use hand commands the better and faster she is to trust my direction. This will be my dogs first season in the blind as well.  We have spent quite a lot of time just sitting in a blind blowing a call to a dry field.  Toss a bumper or two but mainly I am getting her ready to sit tight and wait.   I am no expert but have learned how to train from a friend that was a field trial trainer.  If you have a question feel free to PM me.

My first 2 hunting dogs were chessies love the breed and loved the fact that they were great gaurd dogs in the off season.. my last one could snifff out and trap a crackhead in a car like a blue tick with a cat in a tree. Great open water and cold weather dog. Have fun, enjoy yhier idiosyncratic traits.

Chessys are great. She will remember her training, and I'm sure she will have great natural abilities. If you are her person, she will do anything for you. Great dogs. Incredibly intelligent. Remind your hunting buddies to not pick up any ducks in her pile inside the blind.
I felt like a one legged cat trying to bury a terd on a frozen pond!

Andy seemed to be pretty tired and I didn't see his latest prodigies showing real well the last few years. I think he ran out of gumbo and needed some home time. Shoot me a PM if you need some ideas on trainers for a tune up after this season.

Plant birds and kill as many as you can afford over her and she will never ever forget.
