high hunt 08
« on: June 02, 2010, 09:00:29 PM »
went on a high buck hunt in late september of 08 outside of leavenworth.  only saw a couple deer but saw 17 different bears that week.  unfortunately the only bears we saw on our mountain were sows and cubs (3 different pairs).  the boars were a couple air miles north of us but the only way we could see to get to them was drop the 3600 feet down to the valley floor and then up the same distance on the mountain they were.  saw 5 different bears in the same area one morning in the berry patches...figured they all were boars as they were all alone feeding.  2nd to the last day of the hunt saw this bear and watched her for over 15 minutes until I saw the cub meandering behind her.  She was less than 150 yards when i first saw her but had seen other sows and cubs in that same berry field so had to be sure.  We watched her feed with her cub until she was about 60 yards from us and I told the wife that was close enough.  We had the wind so she couldn't smell us so I started moving side hill to get into her line of sight.  Quickly she picked up my movement and looked directly at me.  She immediately turned and took back off down the hill.  Funny as hell as all I saw was a black rocket zoom directly up a tree.  that cub climbed as high as he could and was hanging on for dear life.  he was rocking back and forth as he "bear hugged" the tree then he did the fireman manuever and slid down the tree and followed mama.  the last day of our hunt we saw them again on the lower hillside about 600 yards from camp

nope, haven't been back....wanted to get a nice muley but no luck....saw more bears that week though, than I have in a long, long time.  I had my wife set up on that bear for 10 minutes telling her not to shoot untill I knew it was a sow or boar.... turned out to have a cub but she was cool with it and didn't shoot....still looking for her to shoot her first bear...one of these days she will get the green light

The picture of the cub in the tree is cool. I have never seen that in person.

Good story.  Sounds similar to my 2008 High hunt when I got the bear in my profile picture.

Did you see any legal deer? Crazy how many bears are in that high country.
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

saw a couple spindly bucks opening morning on the hillside in the last pic...tried getting around them to get a better look but no luck.  No big bucks, though...saw more bear than deer...tracks indicated they were moving at night
